It’s World Diabetes Month!

How best to be aware of this disease than to learn from the real life story of ProvenMed’s writer who was only diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2 two years ago?

How does she cope? How does she go about her daily activities? Read on to find out.

To a diabetic like me, life can be overwhelming. Moods can swing as fast as the swinging of a grandfather clock’s pendulum. My blood sugar rises and falls depending on what I've been eating or doing the whole day. My fingers feel numb from the many pricks of my glucometer.

But life has to go on.

I used to have fixed schedules for everything; otherwise, it would be chaos. Or so I thought. But since I had diabetes, my bio clock has gone awry. Often, night sleep is difficult, maybe due to a rise in my blood sugar level because I caved in the demands of my sweet tooth.

I used to love all kinds of sweets, from cakes to ice creams to candies. My family and friends always commented on the amount of sugar I placed in every cup of coffee.

Now, I have to be content with a tiny slice of dessert to satisfy my sweet tooth.

I used to hate drinking water due to its plain, savorless taste. I loved drinking sodas with every meal, even with snacks. But after being diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2 two years ago, drinking water became mandatory. It wasn't easy because I wanted to open a soda can each time I drank a glass of water.

Now, I've come to love this plain-looking, flavorless liquid, not because it's the only thing I can drink; but because I have finally realized its value. It keeps me alive, holds my incontinence at bay, and improves my mental ability. It is, indeed, the most precious liquid.

I used to be scared of needles. I still am, but I have to deal with it because pricking my fingers every day is the only way to check my blood sugar.

I used to be sporadic with my exercise. My usual excuse for not doing it was, "I have a lot of work," or "I have several deadlines today." The truth was, I was just too lazy to do it.

Now, I have to force myself to do at least 15 minutes of exercise daily.

But I have to overcome all the fears and difficulties that come with being a Type 2 Diabetic.

So how do I cope with these lifestyle changes?

First, I think of my loved ones. Although my children are all adults, I know they still need me. I'll miss them terribly, especially the bright smiles of our grandchildren if I am hospitalized due to a diabetic complication.

Second, I think of my passions. How can I write for myself and my clients if I'm bedridden or dead? How can I teach my writing students? It'll be such a waste because I spent a decade building my career!

Third, I think of how wonderful life is and how I can share its beauty with all who care to read my thoughts.

With these thoughts in mind, I channel my energies according to my body's rhythm. As I mentioned earlier, my bio clock has gone awry. I don't have fixed schedules, but I do my tasks in chunks according to my body clock.
Here's an example of what I do regardless of my waking time:

30 minutes: coffee and book reading
45 minutes: personal hygiene
30 minutes: exercise
15 minutes: breakfast
60 minutes: client work
30 minutes: social media browsing
60 minutes: rest
60 minutes: client work
60 minutes: learning something new
180 minutes: teaching
60 minutes: client work
120 minutes: Netflix

These thoughts also help me avoid incontinence.

Some writers have a hard time wrestling themselves away from their computers when they're writing. After all, writing is an intensive brain activity, and we need to be "in the zone" to be able to express our thoughts better.

But diabetics like me need to go to the bathroom 20-25 times a day. To a writer, that's like focusing on a dartboard, aiming for the bull's eye, only to be jolted by someone at the back!

To minimize my bathroom breaks, I do incontinence exercises to strengthen my core and pelvic floor.

True, there are too many lifestyle and career changes to make if you're a Type 2 Diabetic. But these changes become insignificant considering the benefits they provide - a longer life to spend with the ones you love, to pursue your passions, and enjoy the best things that life can offer.
