FINDING A JESUS I CAN FOLLOW

I grew up in the church. It was where community happened, and friends were made. I love the ritual and the sense of tradition. And yet, somewhere along the way, I fell out of love with church doctrine and the cardboard cutout Jesus that hangs on many church walls.
And that “way” was a rocky and rough road of seeing people I loved hurt and left out because of gender, race, sexual orientation or just not believing the party line of a particular church.
So conflicted -
The problem for me was that I truly believe that Jesus is my path to God, the Divine, the Source, whatever it is that you call the energy that surrounds us. I just wasn’t finding that Jesus in the church.
And so, I set about figuring out what about church doctrine and tradition that I could throw out, what I could file away as history, and what I could keep. I also began to look at Jesus in a new way – without the “saving blood” and with the power that he promised to his disciples.
I began to see Jesus as pointing us toward the same transformation and connection to the Divine that he found when he walked among us.

If you are looking for a Jesus that you can follow and others who are searching for that Jesus, let me give you a copy of my book, A Jesus I Can Follow: Should I Leave the Church or Should I Stay?

This year we will not always be imposing the ashes because of social distancing and here in Missouri because we are experiencing sub-zero wind chills
We are forced to look at our traditions and find new ways to remember that we come from dust and to dust our bodies will return
This image of drawing a cross in the dirt reminds us that each of us carries the image of the Creator within us.
This year as we prepare to follow Jesus on his journey to the cross, spread some dust on a plate and draw a cross to remember that Jesus points us inward to that Divine Spark that is our heart and soul.

Post a picture of your own cross in the dust

Sunday, February 14 was not only Valentine's Day but also Transfiguration Sunday - the story of Jesus transfigured on the mountain top.
The transfiguration is a promise that we also can be transformed.
The transfiguration of Jesus is a glimpse of things to come.
This week marks the beginning of the season of Lent
If the beginning of Lent is ashes its end is resurrection
• As Christians, we dare to dream that it is true, that the Christ has been raised.
• Along with God, we dare to dream of a world where love lasts, war doesn't.
• We dare to dream that the private pain we carry with us will someday be put to rest.
• We dare to dream of a different way of being in the world.

That is the transfiguration that Jesus promises to all of creation.

What transfigurations are occurring in your life?
