⚠️ Fire Information Update – August 24, 2023 @ 9:00 p.m.

⚠️ Wood Buffalo Complex (previously Parks Canada Fire 7, Alberta Wildfire MNZ003, and NWT SS069)
Today, we saw some extreme fire activity on the furthest northwest part of the wildfire perimeter, west of Thebacha. The wind pushed the wildfire towards Thebacha and structure protection was turned on in Thebacha and along Foxholes Road.
Helicopters were bucketing in that area, however; today they were limited operationally because of poor visibility. We also ordered airtankers that were expected this morning and they were again unable to fly due to poor visibility.
Fire activity in other areas of the wildfire perimeter was minimal and experienced minimal fire growth today.
Earlier in the day, we were able to get some additional dozer guard work completed on the north flank of the wildfire near Fort Smith. We also had crews out working on the flank east of the finger that ran towards Fort Fitzgerald on Tuesday.
There was an ignition operation that ignition specialists were hoping to finish off today south of Fort Fitzgerald, however; the conditions were not favourable. Ignition specialists will continue to look for new opportunities to complete this operation.
Tomorrow, we anticipate a challenging firefighting day based on the forecast and current drought codes. We will have crews and resources out tomorrow as long as it’s safe to do so. We also have airtankers that are ready to be deployed tomorrow morning, if visibility allows.

[Oct. 20 – 8:20 a.m.] Crews continued fire suppression overnight and used a bulldozer to extend the firebreak on the west side. The fire is still being held with a well-established perimeter in place to protect all homes in the area.

Community members can expect more smoke to be present today as the wind is blowing towards residential areas. Helicopter bucket operations and ground fire suppression will continue throughout the day. Please give crews room to work, follow instructions from emergency officials and stay out of the area if you do not live in the neighbourhood.

Updates will be provided throughout the day. All recent updates and more information on the fire will continue to be available at rmwb.ca/fireupdate. You can subscribe to this webpage to be automatically notified everytime a new update is posted.
