Logan Whaley - KAIT
K8 Sports Anchor/Reporter. Jn. 1:16. Probably talking about Braves and fantasy football.
The result wasn’t ideal, but greatly enjoyed my time in Montgomery. It was awesome to meet several Arkansas State fans and I’m thankful for the privilege of covering the Red Wolves!
Catch Red Wolves Live tonight at 10:15 on KAIT, kait8.com and the K8 News app!
Had a ton of fun with this story!
A 7-year age gap between starting QBs, unique connections, and two programs that have turned things around from a poor 2022s. The Camellia Bowl battle between Arkansas State and Northern Illinois is an intriguing one.
See my preview of the matchup here:
Whaley: Sixth-year QBs, program turnarounds and unique connections, diving deeper into the Camellia Bowl matchup There are only seven FBS teams who won three games or fewer last season that are going bowling this season. Arkansas State and NIU are two of the seven.
This one was a ton of fun to cover. I don’t know if I’ll ever see a game like this one again.
Scoring 77 vs. a FBS foe (a program record vs. FBS opponent) in a game that featured 7 rushing TDs, a kickoff return TD, 2 pick sixes, and a fumble recovery TD… unbelievable.
When I got started at KAIT, I covered a ton of transitions and changes within Arkansas State. Seeing the optimism and excitement around the program is great to see.
My early thoughts: It’s not the result fans may have hoped for, and not at all going for the ‘moral victory’ route, but this team played South Alabama way more competitively than it did in the past two seasons.
The Jaguars defense is one of the best in the country, a young team (and offense) like this will learn from it.
Will hopefully have a column out within the next couple of days when I get back from Mobile and dive deeper into the stats.
What did you think of the performance Saturday?
Before Football Friday Night kicks off, I previewed the Arkansas State/Coastal Carolina game, plus gave my thoughts on the Sun Belt basketball preseason polls.

Whaley: Why this week is a true measuring stick for the state of A-State football Troy, who won the Sun Belt last season, returns 19 starters and will face the Red Wolves coming off back-to-back wins.
Accounting for over 300 yards and 5 total TDs in your first career start is no easy feat. Jaylen Raynor did that and much more.
Here's what stood out to me from Saturday's victory over Southern Miss, and why A-State is in a similar situation Southern Miss was in last week when they go on the road to face UMass.
Take a look:
Whaley: Diving deeper into Raynor’s breakout game, why A-State is in Southern Miss’ shoes this week Raise your hands if you had “all three starting quarterbacks getting played on the lineup introduction video” on your Arkansas State football 2023 bingo cards.
Trying out something new. Periodically, I’ll take a deep dive researching Arkansas State football.
This article will basically tell you what A-State is doing well in, what they’re not, and some other things that I find interesting.
This week I took a look at the QB battle, how Butch Jones has handled in-season QB races, Pro Football Focus analytics, and much, much more.
Have a look here:
Whaley: QB battle, looking ahead to Arkansas State’s Sun Belt opener The Red Wolves needed a spark in the worst way after being outscored 110-3 to start the season. They found it in a tune-up 31-7 victory over Stony Brook. So much so that there will be a three-way battle of who will be the QB1 for the Sun Belt opener against Southern Miss.
Good morning from Norman.
Logan and I took a nap after FFN, hit the road to cover Arkansas State football.

Had a great time reminiscing on the 30 year history of Football Friday Night last night. There have truly been some incredible moments, and amazing personalities like Dick Clay, Mark Tucker, Glenn Marini and more helped bring you those moments.
I’m excited for my 4th season of FFN. And as always, it’s a lot of fun getting to share the screen with Chris.
