Update: An 'independent' consultant has been appointed to investigate the mishandling of a safeguarding incident at Nottingham Castle. The consultant has links with at least 2 of the trustees on the castle's board. Requests for information on how the consultant was selected has not been provided despite numerous requests.
Requests for the complaints procedure and EDI policy have still not been provided by the castle's board.
On the 17th August 2021, Panya Banjoko's granddaughters suffered a racial assault at Nottingham Castle. After reporting the incident to the castle no assistance was given to Panya or her granddaughters, aged 11 and seven. This was the second racist incident at the Castle since its reopening on the 22 June 2021 after a £30 million three year renovation.
Many members of the Nottingham community were quite rightly outraged at the mishandling of the incident and a failure to safeguard children. There was also a worrying number of Black people who began to share their personal experiences of being unfairly treated at heritage sites in the city.
Heritage, Arts and Culture Watch aims to highlight those incidents in a bid to shame the Nottingham Arts and Heritage sector to do better.
