The motivation I needed to get my head back into the instagame after a glorious 4 weeks off!

There is so much to b*tch and moan about insta for…but v grateful to be reminded of the goodness that can come from it too 💞 I’ve worked with clients from all over the world who have connected with me through insta plus countless more who follow me here or on SUNDAY SKIN and I’ll often get messages of thanks for the education I share or the resources they’ve downloaded for free and the impact they’ve had on their health and skin. That’s pretty cool and something I can get excited about 😎 🥰

I’ve never met this lovely woman, but she’s a fellow colleague who was pulling her hair out over what to try next for her skin….a message that often lands in my DM’s…

What an end to the week, a Friday morning smear test…something I personally feel super excited about as a form of preventative healthcare, and grateful that this is something still offered to me from the NHS - thank you!

Regular smear tests are so so valuable, they should be carried out every 3 years so please go book yours today if it’s been a while…. 😘

And now off to , looking forward to catching up with colleagues and being the first time hear about new protocols, treatments, tests and more in the world of integrated medicine and of course to share with all you lovely folk here and in clinic

I wanted to post this to share that there is a far less sexy side of self care and that is the change in mindset that’s needed to start prioritising your cup a little more.

These changes could easily have been instructed to me, in fact I know they have been by many wonderful practitioners I’ve had the joy of working with over the years and continue to do so 😘😘 thank you if you are reading this ❤️❤️

But I find the most powerful lessons we make in looking after ourselves and prioritising our health come from ourselves…and sometimes quite frankly this can take years!

A client today shared how overwhelming it feels to think about having to focus on her health forever. I totally understood where she was coming from! But I also got to share how if you get the right support it honestly can stop feeling like a job on a to do list, and just like what you need to do to feel like you 💓

Consistency is key 👍🏻

I have not always eaten breakfast 🫣 it is a recent habit in the last 3 years to ensure I eat in first 2 hours of waking. I’ve found this is what works for me, my body, my hormones, genetics and lifestyle. 👌🏻

Honestly don’t know why it took my 34 years to start this habit 😳, I’m a seriously unhinged woman without brekkie….

How about you? What health habits are you still putting off?? 🫣

As you can see eggs are a firm fave as they provide so much nutrition for brain and hormone health…. I see so many clients coming to me having avoided eggs for fear of breakouts…. 🙄

I’ve never had to remove eggs from a clients diet to heal their acne. But countless times I’ve added them in and their healing has taken off….. 🙌

I’m so tired of bankrupting myself with expensive creams and treatments promising to keep my skin ‘young’

I bl**dy hated my skin when I was younger

I’ve worked my ass off to get comfortable in my skin in my late 30’s

I’ve birthed a child, created a thriving clinic, supported hundreds of women with their health and skin, moved house, worked on my relationship, cut people out of my life who just brought me down, invested in countless therapies and cried LOTS on pretty much all of them feeling totally lost in not always having a sense of who I am, what I need and how to give it to myself

Life has been great and life has been hard

My face shows it

I’m OK with that 👌🏻

It’s taken me some energy but I am ok with aging and my face, skin, bum and tum showing it.

As much as my skin reminding me of this is daaaaaaaaamn annoying. Doing the work that I do I honestly prefer it to getting no visible signal until…….😳

Cos I’ve definitely had other signals from my body that I need to rest and put down…but ho early is the huge spot that makes me finally listen!!!

Got rosacea? 🥴

Had your thyroid tested recently? 🫣

And no that doesn’t include just having just your TSH/T4 levels tested….we need more info than that to properly assess that lovely thyroid of yours 🫡

I’ve been doing a looooot of research into rosacea recently. And I hate to say it lovelies but it’s not a skin condition I would hope just goes away on its own……or just rely on topical treatments to treat/manage

A bit like acne it’s a disease state that involves multiple body systems: immune, endocrine, detox, diet, nervous system….but another driver that stands out is thyroid disease.

Unlike acne though, there seems to be a lot of resistance to the idea that rosacea can be managed with diet and lifestyle….and that’s it’s a condition you have to ‘learn to live with’

I ain’t settling for that for my clients! And I’m going ti be diving into the research and mechanisms with you to help change your minds too!!

My BODY pillar was by far the most popular vote in my stories so let us start here 👏🏼

As a quick recap I have created 3 pillars (BODY, MIND, ENVIRONMENT) as a framework that I guide each of my clients through on their True Skin Transformation.

My belief is that our skin is a symptom of an imbalance within one, or each, of these pillars and by looking into each one in turn we are better able to identify, and heal, your root causes, triggers and mediators for your skin condition.

The BODY pillar covers everything to do with the physical body and includes:

🍳 Diet
🧬 genetics
🧻 digestive function
🦠 microbiome health
🩸 nutrient depletions / anaemia
🤯 hormone production / transport / communication & elimination
🎢 blood sugar balance
🍋 detox + elimination
🏃‍♀️ movement

In order to fully heal your skin, and ensure lasting results; each of these areas needs to be properly assessed and supported.

No bandaids or short cuts here thank you v much 🙌

So often I see people spending a huge amount of time, energy and money just focusing on one or two areas…..then getting frustrated and giving up when their skin doesn’t heal, concluding that their is nothing in internal healing for them 😞

In the last few days of my luteal phase….. 🩸 . So much of me wants to get the seemingly mammoth task of prepping and painting walls in our dining room….but my tank feels empty 🪫

I sometimes get a burst of energy towards my period, like my brain wants to get s**t done and finish up tasks, this can be really helpful in a work sense getting pesky to do’s done, but energetically after a morning in the park and juggling work with parenting I’m feeling flat and if I burn through what I have left I know that will leave more likely to unwelcome pain/fatigue/tears/spots with my impending bleed…so I know better than to take on the task of decorating an entire room rn….don’t I 🙈?

Learning to accept where my body is at is a constant practice. Every month I feel like I’m being tested. 🙄

I hate that in these days my mood feels a little out of my control. I don’t enjoy parenting, let alone being a partner. I can just about tolerate the dog and cat, most days.

I hate that I then pass judgement on myself for feeling any of these things.

I know what my hormones are doing rn, it’s totally normal for your mood and energy to seemingly nose dive in the days leading up to your period.

I also know that there is plenty that’s in my control to help me ride out that nose dive however. Practices I teach my clients all day in clinic…..but still of course have had to learn, and continue to learn, the hard way myself.

Todays practice? Learning to be ok with walking past a room that looks like this for a few more days👆🏼

It’s a constant practice. Learning to accept our female bodies, that we can wake up feeling one way and go to bed feeling quite another. Our energy levels can plummet from underneath us. And we can fight it….but I know where this gets me - and my skin - so acceptance it is.

It’s all very well declaring “it’s just your hormones” to someone suffering with acne but…

1️⃣ that’s not very helpful when you are struggling with your skin

2️⃣ its incredibly disempowering to a women - and I can’t help but feel feeds the narrative of ‘oh alright then let’s just cut them off with this magic pill’

3️⃣ it’s not true

Our hormones are one player in acne, the other key player here is the immune system, genetics AND diet + lifestyle

Doesn’t that feel a tad more hopefully and empowering??

All too many convenient excuses: time, money, energy, resources

How can joy become something that we will so easily put off…for what?

It had been weeks since I’d made it to a riding lesson, convincing myself it was for something more important than going just for me. 🙈

But I’m so SO glad I went - I did my FIRST JUMP! On a horse! Literally still beaming and the reminder I needed as to why I try and prioritise ME one evening every week to do something that brings me joy and helps me feel more ME ☺️

YES my love, I’m afraid you can. 😭

Flares are a reality. 🤬

Hormones can be a bitch. 🤯

You can wake up feeling top of the world!!!

But by afternoon be in the deepest hormonal funk….. 🤬🥺🫠

you can be eating your veggies…. 🥦

upping your protein…. 🥚

getting your steps in…. 🦵🏿

Working on stress 🧘🏽‍♂️

Sticking to your skincare routine 👍🏻

and still not be seeing the results that you want 😿

Skin >>>>> Takes >>>> Time

Something you will often hear in the natural medicine world is if you’ve been experiencing your symptoms for x amount of time, you can expect it to take x amount of time for it to heal.

I don’t always think acne needs the same amount of time again to heal once we’ve figured out your root cause, but if you’ve a lifetime of habits and limiting beliefs to unpick…things may take more than a couple of months.

It takes time.

Your skin will heal.

Focus on the foundations

Try to live your life like you have the skin you want already

And don’t give up!

Here is my guide to understanding what might be causing your back acne.

Come take a look at your acne through my 3 lenses - BODY, MIND, ENVIRONMENT

IMBALANCES in your BODY
- blood dysregulation is often at the heart of acne, especially on the back. With more hair follicles and sebaceous glands the back (and chest) can be more vulnerable to insulin which can drive sebum production which can then result in more spots.
- Microbiome balance and overall gut health should also be considered

MIND
- stress drives cortisol which slows wound healing, upsets your microbiome, further drives blood sugar deregulation and quite literally stresses out your skin! You can’t avoid all stressed but my tips included here can really help calm your stress response and skin.

ENVIRONMENT
- sweaty skin, hot water and hair products can all trigger acne. You don’t need to drive yourself crazy trying to avoid them all but there are some simple changes I’ve included in the post you can make today.

CONFUSED AF as to that’s CAUSING YOUR BREAKOUTS?? 😓🤬😩🙄🫣🤯

1️⃣Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition involving the sebaceous glands of hair follicles. What’s often not talked about is that ….

2️⃣Acne is a systemic disease which is often seen alongside other systemic and metabolic conditions for example insulin resistance/PCOS, leaky gut, gut dysbiosis, depression, endometriosis…..

3️⃣Acne - and these other disease states - occurs from complex interactions between environment and genetic factors. Previously acne bacteria was thought to be the main cause of acne, but we now know your overall health state that controls/reacts and allows the bacteria to overgrow are considered *more important* (than the bacteria itself)

4️⃣Therapies that just focus on killing acne bacteria isn’t going to be enough for many acne sufferers. A holistic approach is required that focuses on optimising overall health considering how each of the body systems involved in acne are interacting and restoring balance.
