As many of you know, I live in Kure Beach. What you may not be aware of is the Town Leaders of Kure Beach submitted an application to CAMA to remove our iconic wooden boardwalk with a multi-use ground level 10ft wide concrete sidewalk. CAMA approved the permit for an 8ft wide ground level concrete or other acceptable material walkway/sidewalk.
Kure Beach residents as a whole are very upset with the project, as well as with how the town leaders have handled the entire process. There seems to be so many conflicting statements from the mayor as well as some town council members. We have been told the reason for the project is due to the cost of maintenance. (Since a past employee retired about 2.5 years ago, the town has not taken care of the boardwalk. Timely repairs are not made, plantings are not kept trimmed off the boardwalk, and the overall maintenance has not been a priority). We are also told the reason for the project is because town maintenance staff have complained about taking care of the boardwalk. I am one of a group of homeowners doing extensive due diligence & talking with our town residents & visitors, as well as with other leaders in the Wilmington community.
I personally have spoken with the NC Coastal Federation in Wrightsville Beach and learned how this project would adversely affect our beautiful dunes as well as creating storm water run-off problems.
I have also spoken with the director of the Wilmington Film Commission. 2021 was the best year to date for the Wilmington Film Industry and 2022 looks to be a close second! Currently there are a few shows being filmed on our beautiful island including Hightown here in Kure Beach. It's my understanding from the director that the filming takes place on our iconic wooden boardwalk because it is the only location where you can walk a boardwalk while seeing the ocean - with the look of coastal New England - where the show is set. If that boardwalk is removed, filming would not continue in Kure Beach. I know many of you depend on our film industry to support your families and I want you all to know this is VERY disturbing to me.
Lastly, based on our conversations with town leaders, we are told this process will be interactive with input from the community on creating the actual plan for the new sidewalk/walkway. But at the same time, we are hushed at meetings from asking questions and having open discussions. In addition, the proposed plan located on the KB website under the Bike/Pedestrian Plan - does not comply with the town's own Land Use Plan nor with the NCDOT guidelines for multi use paths.
I would invite you to attend the next Kure Beach town council meeting on Monday, August 15 @ 6pm and voice your concerns. If you are unable to attend, you can call in to the meeting and speak....you are allowed 3 minutes. Also, please contact the town leaders by sending an email to our town clerk, Mandy Sanders at [email protected]. You can ask for your email to be read aloud and be part of the official meeting minutes.
