R.E. Bockmühl arranged this version of Bach's Chaconne for his friend Karl Davidov. The Davidov Strad was named after the Russian cellist, and went on to be played by both Jacqueline du Pré and Yo-Yo Ma. Bockmühl made a number of contributions to the music field, but he generally enjoys less renown today. The piece has notable differences from the original version, but retains the spirit of the work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwJaDY6mKeA

Bach Cello Suite No. 6 in D major- Gigue Justin Page- cello
The reverence and status attributed to Bach today did not necessarily exist during his lifetime. Concert hall settings with attentive and quiet audiences did not become commonplace until much later. If anything, much of his music was written in an attempt to grab the attention of listeners who were busy gossiping with each other and drinking coffee. Following his death, he was buried in an unmarked grave where he remained for over a century. His music was not accepted globally during his life or in the years after his death. Through the efforts of other musicians, such as Mendelssohn, his reputation grew over time into the legend it is today. With declining eyesight Bach continued to compose music, including some for his own funeral. While this may sound like an epic tale to a death-obsessed group of musicians and audience alike, the real story is much more simple, tragic, and comedic. Bach died several months after an eye surgery went bad at the hands of the same surgeon who operated unsuccessfully on Georg Frideric Handel. According to Daniel Albert, ""He practiced in the most flamboyant way, drawing crowds to watch procedures in the town square - and then getting out of town before the patients took their bandages off."

Over the course of his lifetime Bach held a number of jobs in different cities, but had workplace conflict at almost all of them.
"On one side was an irascible man, passionate in defence of his craft and bristling at any perceived threat to his right to practise it unobstructed. On the other was a formidable alliance of secular and religious powers whose methods of subjugating employees had been honed over time and who were expert at making life difficult for successive cantors. The conflict also points to a deep contradiction in the make-up of Bach's personality: tacit acceptance of the hierarchical order that came with his time and his religion; and, opposed to that, as we will explore in this chapter, signs of constitutional truculence and a recurrent refusal to accept authority." Adrian Steger, his boss at the Arnstadt Consistory during his early years stated, "He shows little inclination to work...he is not even willing to give an explanation of the fact...a change will be necessary, a break will have to come soon..."
-Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven, John Eliot Gardiner (The Incorrigible Cantor)
J.S. Bach composed over 1,000 pieces, including approximately 300 cantatas. The competition, Telemann, was one of the most prolific composers in history writing over 3,000 pieces.

Although I have excluded them, every movement with exception of the prelude has repeats. The expectation during the baroque era was that the music would be varied, or ornamented, by the performer when the material was repeated. This was mostly in the spirit of creativity, as no two performances were expected to be the same.

Bach Cello Suite No. 6 in D major- Allemande Justin Page- cello
The sixth and final suite was composed for a five string instrument. An E string a perfect fifth above the top string, A, would explain the nature of the writing here. Why do we play this with four strings? It is most likely because it is difficult to acquire a five string alternative, and human beings are unnecessarily and inexplicably competitive. The violoncello piccolo, or cello da spalla, was probably the intended instrument. Although it is rare, it can still be found today! Here is the modern cello, 4 string version.

The rhythm in this repeats almost every measure. When the rhythm does deviate from the pattern, the change is very noticeable as a result.

The gavotte was a popular dance at the Palace of Versailles during the time of Louis XIV. The architecture and design of the palace and its grounds are good examples of the baroque movement. Although seemingly unlikely, the second gavotte shares many characteristics of modern day rap music; an affinity for the minor key, duple meter, a regularly emphasized beat, and fast and detailed "syllabic" iterations.

Out of the multitude of Bach children, four of them continued the composing tradition professionally. Carl Philip Emmanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann, Johann Christoph Friedrich, and Johann Christian all became composers, with C.P.E. Bach and J.C. Bach being the most noteworthy (pun intended). For now, more O.G. Bach.

The fifth suite is the most stylistically divergent of the six. It is written using scordatura, or mistuning. The top string is tuned down a step from A to G which allows for chords and sonorities that would otherwise be impossible. The opening is an introduction in the French overture style that is followed by a fugue; a hallmark of Bach's music. The fugue is to Bach what the one-handed backhand is to Roger Federer. He didn't invent it, but he certainly perfected it.

These pieces have been transcribed for almost every instrument imaginable. Some of these are unable to play multiple notes simultaneously, so they would play single notes in quick succession to replicate the effect. This movement features good, clear examples of double stops. Playing different notes on different strings at the same time is one of the best features of stringed instruments. For any fiddle music fans, fiddling relies heavily on double stops and open string drones.
