Okay- votes are all counted- and while I am disappointed in the outcome, I am incredibly proud of the race that I ran. This campaign has made me a stronger board member, and I look forward to continuing to serve the Lansing community as a member of the Lansing School District Board of Education.

Big thank you to the over 6000 people in this community who believed in me and cast their vote in support of my election. I would not have made it this far without the unwavering encouragement of my friends and family.

Congratulations to Peter Spadafore , Brian T. Jackson and Mayor Andy Schor on your successful re-election to office. The city of Lansing has a lot of work to accomplish in the next four years, best of luck to you all!

It is a humbling experience to be recognized by the Lansing Branch of the NAACP as the recipient of the 2021 Community Trailblazer award- my emotions are high and all I can imagine is just how proud my PaPa would be of me today.

I hope to continue to carry the torch to make him proud.

The early sunset may be narrowing my after-work-before-bedtime canvassing window, but it hasn’t slowed me down.

I love knocking on doors, meeting new people and admiring all of our wonderful neighborhoods.

PS- Trick or Treating is going to be a blast this year based on some of the intricately decorated houses I saw tonight! I promise I only screamed once and jumped off a porch twice! 😂

I find it interesting that I found this slogan on a mailer from another candidate- a mailer thar was paid for by ANOTHER all male candidate endorsing PAC- when I’ve had this tag-line since day one…

People matter over politics- period.

Election 2021: Get to know the candidates for Lansing mayor, city council 03/10/2021

Election 2021: Get to know the candidates for Lansing mayor, city council After a large candidate pool in the Lansing primary, here's who's left and what they have to say going into the general election.

Round Two — Lansing City Council at-large: Top two vote-getters will fill two seats. 03/10/2021

“Willis is a proven leader with significant experience leading a large and complex public institution. Spadafore, whom we endorsed in the August primary, has demonstrated the ability to govern with common sense and compassion and deserves another term. For these reasons, we endorse Peter Spadafore and Rachel Willis for At-Large City Council.”

This quote is from the City Pulse article regarding the mayoral race, but I have linked the overall At-Large voter guide-for a more thorough look at my campaign.

Round Two — Lansing City Council at-large: Top two vote-getters will fill two seats. With Kathie Dunbar’s departure from the City Council at the end of the year because of her mayoral bid, at least one fresh face is guaranteed to take the dais at City Hall next year. The odds are whoever that is will serve alongside Spadafore.

Women Still Face Hurdles in Running for Office 28/09/2021

Diversity and equity are incredibly important to many people in the city of Lansing, including myself.

Inclusion means being intentional about hearing from diverse groups of people and ensuring that multiple voices and perspectives are heard when making a decision.

On the November 2, 2021 ballot, there are four female candidates running for office in the City of Lansing, representing almost 45% of the ballot- yet ZERO women were selected by the Chamber for endorsement. I won’t even mention that three of the four female candidates are of color.

Women running for office face barriers beyond those of their male peers.
“A variety of societal and individual barriers that keep women from considering a run for office. Systemic racism and structural inequities faced by women of different backgrounds, socioeconomic status, sexual orientations, and religions mean there is seldom a one size fits all answer.”

Women Still Face Hurdles in Running for Office Female candidates receive more attacks on Twitter than male candidates.

September 11, 2001- I was in the 8th grade at Gardner Middle school. When the attacks first started, I was in Orchestra class and we didn’t have a television in our room, so my class didn’t see it happen. When I transitioned to my next class, kids who had heard about it requested my English teacher, Mrs. Spicer, to turn on the television. She handed out a ditto paper and we were all glued to the TV. During that class, the second plane hit the towers.

The bell rang and we transitioned to the next class. The teachers all lined the halls and asked us to quickly get to our next rooms. When I arrived to Mr. Berl’s algebra class we turned on the TV and the towers were gone.

That’s where I was, 20 years ago when the world changed. Today, I listened to our Governor and others honor the courage and sacrifices of the first reponders. The bell rang out as the names of those who lost their life that day were read. It was a somber experience that reminds us of a moment in time when the entire country stood together.

It struck me today that 18 year olds who will be casting their ballots for the first time this November were not even born on 9/11/01. It is our responsibility to lead the charge to ensure the legacy of this day lives on.
