Direspire Hall needs a new Creature Keeper, and Cora’s dad is asked to take the job by letter but he refuses to take the job. Cora has dreamed of caring for magical and mythical creatures and one night she stumbles in for shelter only to be given the role of her wildest dreams.
But there are secrets in the shadows of her new home, and someone will stop at nothing to keep it that way.

Why I liked this book...
The storyline itself is amazing, it grips you when every chapter begins and ends. I could hardly put the book down to go to sleep! It is one of the best books I have ever read, in every possible way!

Fern (opps I did it again) is my favourite character even though she is not a real person, and Cora broke my heart when she said goodbye to Fern.

We're very excited to share the official Book Collection for the Summer Reading Challenge 2021, Wild World Heroes!

Developed with WWF, the world's leading independent conservation organisation, Wild World Heroes is a celebration of reading for pleasure that will inspire children to stand up for the future of our planet.

The Summer Reading Challenge is delivered in partnership with public libraries and launches across the UK in June and July. Children will also be able to take part in Wild World Heroes at home through the online Challenge platform. Wild World Heroes will be brought to life with bespoke artwork from award-winning author and illustrator Heath McKenzie.

The Summer Reading Challenge Book Collection comprises 70 must-read titles for children aged 4-11. Each title has been specially chosen to reflect key Wild World Heroes themes including the natural world, young heroes, and taking action for the environment.

For a long time, I wanted to write a story about a girl who, just like me, is happiest around animals. When quiet Cora arrived on the page I couldn't wait to tell her story, and I had so much fun dreaming up extraordinary creatures, from glass dragons, sea beasts, magical birds, to a nightmarish creature from the depths of the earth.

✨ The Creature Keeper ✨

I was a shy child, and sometimes I found it hard to communicate. My words didn’t always come out right; they got tangled up and muddled. I was at my happiest when I was with animals - feeding the orphaned kittens and lambs on our farm and keeping chickens and pigeons, with my dogs never far away. I would spend hours birdwatching, learning the calls of different species 🐦

As I grew older, I found my confidence in caring for creatures and accepted that my muddled-up words were a part of me 🌿

In The Creature Keeper, I wrote about a girl called Cora, who becomes the creature keeper of Direspire Hall. Cora struggles to talk to people, and she only feels like herself when she is around animals. When Cora discovers the secrets within Direspire Hall she must find a way to speak up for those that can’t - before it’s too late. 🥀
