Spring brings JOY!

Have you ever made Resurrection Cookies with your kids?
The recipe is simple and the lesson is awesome!

1 cup whole pecans (or chocolate chips for nut allergies)
1 tsp. vinegar
3 egg whites
a pinch of salt
1 cup sugar
Preheat Oven to 300 degrees (Do this first!)
Place pecans in bag and let child beat with a wooden spoon or rubber mallet to break into pieces. Explain that Jesus was arrested and beaten. (John 19:1-3)
Put vinegar into mixing bowl. Have children smell the sour smell and explain that Jesus was given vinegar to drink. (John 19:28-30)
Add egg whites to vinegar. Explain that the eggs represent life. Jesus gave his life for us. (John 10:10-11)
Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand and let them taste it. Put a pinch into the mixing bowl. Explain that Jesus' followers shed salty tears. (Luke 23:27)
Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because he loves us! (Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16)
Beat on high for 12-15 or until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the white color represents the purity of having been forgiven of sin through Jesus' death. (Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3)
Fold in broken nuts or chips and drop by teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet covered in parchment paper. Explain that each mound represents the tomb where Jesus was buried. (Matt 27:57-60)
Put the cookie sheet in the oven. Close the door and turn the oven off. Let the children seal the oven door with tape. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. (Matt 27:65-66)
Go to bed! Explain that they might feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight just like Jesus' followers were sad to leave him in the grave. (John 16:20-22)
The next morning open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice how the cookies are hollow and empty inside. Explain that the same was true of Jesus' grave! (Matt 28:1-9)

worms & spiderlings.

the rose needs the thorn

& run into rainswept days
the same way they
turn towards sun...

And when they're grown &
someone has to speak for those
who have no voice

may they draw upon that

and be the ones.
