CHANGING OUR LIFESTYLE

There is a good reason why Diabetes is called a lifestyle disease. In as much as it is herititary, it is mostly because of lifestyle.

The same food that kills us, is equally the same food that heals us. I know this from experience. When I make healthy delicious my body thanks me by being healthy and not falling sick. My skin looks rejuvenated and fresh. I look great and I feel even greater. When I make bad decisions my body does the opposite. I feel like death.

If you are struggling, my tip for you is to start small. In this way you are most likely not to fail. Start by reducing your intake and then take healthy decisions one day at a time until it's a lifestyle. If you drank 5 classes of coke, start by drinking 3 then 2 then nothing. Same applies with everything else. I have noticed that when people do it all at all, they mostly fail and get into worse habits than before because they are feeling despondent and like they failed themselves.

Add fruits and vegetables to your diet as much as you can. Especially green vegetables. They are abundant in nutrients and are said to be very beneficial for the health of your heart. They contain things such as Vitamin K, magnesium, nitrates, and folates.

A diet that is rich in vegetable and fruits guards you against Cardiovascular disease, lowers blood pressure and prevent stokes, among other things. It not as bad as it sounds, you'll be surprised how much of it you enjoy.

DIABETES 101

Ever since I got covid about eight months ago, it has been close to impossible to control my glucose levels. They have been very high (hyperglycemia). As a result, it has been emotionally draining, outside of the fact that it has taken its toll on my body too(but thank god for a strong body and will). On other days I really didnt want to wake up, period(sometimes I still dont). I wanted to rest, to not fight for my life everyday and to constantly be careful of everything I put in my body. I was tired, I still am but hey some days are better than others right?!

While I was hospitalised, I had to fight both diabetes and covid, it was hard. It helped having a genuis of a specialist, ancestors that kept me in the land of the living, wonderful nurses and staff and a aesthetically pleasing physician. Some medication they used for covid made my sugar levels go up so it was tricky to keep me safe. When they solved the one problem, another rose. If I was not dying from covid, I was dying from diabetes. Dying I was, one way or another. But, here I am months later, alive. Not fully recovered yet but alive and still suffering from long covid and unstable glucose levels. In the beginning, meat smelled rotten and tasted awful, everything tasted off, everything smelled rotten and distorted(When I could smell a bit that is). Even after I was discharged my glucose levels were insanely high and dangerous too. It just hasnt been easy, considering that I have also overtime lost my sense of smell and taste almost completely(another story of how this almost made me depressed). I digress. That is a story for another time. The gist of the matter here is uncontrolled glocuse levels.

A few days ago my glucose level dropped to 3, out of the blue. This is after I had exercised and eaten right, ooh and after I had taken my pills accordingly. The thing with Diabetes is that unlike most chronics it sometimes, no matter how hard you try, gets out of control. The best way to control it is to try as far as possible to not get it. You know, that saying about prevention is better than cure. Yeah that one, no greater truth than that.

Anyway, 3 is not a good number. Its too low .Low blood sugar is called hypoglycemia and you do not want to get that. Although I am back to exercising and eating right, sometimes it is truly hard to control diabetes. Diabetes is an everyday battle. A battle for your body and a battle for the sanity of your mind. Sometimes, it borderline makes you depressed. Depressed and tired, both emotionally and physcially.

It is my plea to you to take care of yourself and your children. To stop feeding your families and young children too much take aways, coldrinks, countless sweets and just living overall unhealthy lifestyles. Trust me, you do not want your children to live with diabetes, nor do you want it for yourself. You do not want the trauma of injecting yourself with insulin or your 5 year old for that matter, because your body is incapable of producing it, or if it is capable, it is not sufficient. It is tough to be in primary or high school and be obese or have diabetes. Take your children for walks and change your diet as a family. Have a healthy lifestyle.

Having said all of this, if you do have diabetes, do not fret. You can live a long and healthy life. It is hard work I wont lie but it is doable. Be encouraged.

Next time I will write about how I believe that diabetes can be healed with food and a lifestyle change, or perhaps go into remission if you please. There is a reason it is called a lifestyle disease.

Thank you for reading.

GIGYMA: QUICK, HEALTHY AND EASY MEALS. Broccoli and Chicken strips. Direction: Grate the broccoli. Boil it for about 5 minutes(not too long because it will lose its nutrients. In fact it isnt supposed to be cooked. It would be better had in/as a salad so we must cook it with little time as possible.) Add aromat and lemon juice(directly from lemon). Chicken Strips: fry onions, ginger, garlic, green paper(any colour is fine) and add chicken strips and yoghurt. I added aniseeds and jeero cumin- whole. You can add black or white pepper too. I used lamb spice. I think it would be great to just use herbs. I didnt have enough. This should take you less than 15 minutes to prepare. Its healthy, its quick and it's easy. Most importantly it's cheap. A lot of people complain about how expensive healthy food is. We need to try to be creative in making our food.

Good Morning Gigyma family

I am not one who likes following rules but what I have come to learn with diabetes or any other chronic for that matter, is that one is required to follow a routine. Routine requires discipline and discipline gives birth to consistent results. Every morning I try to drink green tea and water with cinnamon. Benefits of green tea:Green tea is packed full of health-promoting compounds. Regularly drinking green tea can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of several diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Drinking three to five cups of green tea per day seems to be optimal to reap the most health benefits. Benefits of Cinnamon:It has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Contains antioxidants with anti-inflammatory effects. Its prebiotic properties may improve gut health. Reduces blood pressure. Lowers blood sugar and risk of type 2 diabetes. Relieves digestive discomfort.(Source:google)

Good morning

Sorry I have been negligent in the Diabetes education for Gigyma.

AMARANTH

I am having Amaranth and plain yorghut this morning. As a type 2 diabetic it's important that I know food, plants and seeds and how beneficial they all are in healing my body or how detrimental they may be. About amaranth:Amaranth is a nutritious, gluten-free grain that provides plenty of fiber, protein and micronutrients. It has also been associated with a number of health benefits, including reduced inflammation, lower cholesterol levels and increased weight loss.(Source:Google). Amaranth also ensures that your sugar/glucose levels do not spike and that they are controlled. It can be found at Dischem .

By the way this is not only for diabetics.

DIABETES EDUCATIONAL CHANNEL

So, for a while now I have been contemplating having a YouTube channel on Diabetes education,an area that is lacking immensely. I have not 100 percent figured out how the channel thing works (because generally technology confuses me) as yet although its registered and all. What I will do though until I have it figured out is upload videos weekly on Diabetes education. With this and our other programs, our aim as giGYMa is to aid in curbing the increasing number of people getting Diabetes(an other related illnesses) especially children and equally dying from it. Through education, it is my sincerest hope that I can save a life or two. N.B Remember, prevention is better than cure.

The thing with Diabetes( well my experience at least) is that you struggle to maintain a good weight, especially around your abdomen. Since the beginning of this year I have been drinking Green tea with a teaspoon of Apple Cider vinegar every morning before having anything else. I am starting to see a huge difference. I am losing a considerable amount of weight around my stomach. The key is to be consistent even when you feel like you are not seeing a difference. This has to be supported by a healthy diet and exercise of course. Sometimes I drink this in the evening as well. I also drink warm water with lemon. This is good for everyone, not just Diabetics.
