Dogs Die In Hot Cars - Name, Shame and Help

Every single year we hear of dogs suffocating in hot cars. This page is to help educate those that find dogs like this and to shame those responsible.

UK law does NOT permit the general public to release those dogs easily, even if they are close to death.

This weekend sees a huge increase of temperature for many parts of the UK and Ireland. Keep an eye out for any animals in parked vehicles.

This week has seen the temps rise in NI and UK.
Let's not get complacent.
If we see an animal in an oven on wheels, let's vow to speak up!
Name and shame them here!

If you find a dog in a vehicle, on a warm day, what do you do? Here are some points:

1) Welfare of the dog comes first. No matter what.
2) Windows down and parked in shade means NOTHING
3) Air vent on roof means NOTHING when vehicle is stationary
4) 22oC (72oF) outside can become 47oC (116oF) quickly
5) If dog appears well, call 101 (UK), he could still die in within minutes of appearing ok.
6) If dog appears ill, is excessively drooling or panting rapidly dial 999 (UK) - DON'T WAIT
7) If parked outside a large store, go inside and ask customer service to tanoy owner of registration.
8) Take pics and videos of vehicle, including the dogs, and post here once you have done everything you can for the animal. Include town, store and other relevant info. DM us the info if you don't want to post publicly, we will then share it.
9) The law states that you have a lawful excuse to commit damage (i.e., break a window) if you believe that the owner of the property that you damage would consent to the damage if they knew the circumstances (section 5(2)(a) Criminal Damage Act 1971). We advise that you take video evidence if you plan on doing this and record the name of anyone that is a witness too. You may have to justify this in court.
10) If there is heatstroke then Emergency First aid should be administered:

For the best chance of survival, dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature lowered gradually.

* Move the dog to a shaded and cool area
* Immediately pour cool (not cold to avoid shock) water over the dog. If possible, you can also use wet towels or place them in the breeze of a fan
* Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water
* Continue to pour cool water over the dog until their breathing starts to settle, but not too much that they start shivering
* Once the dog is cool, take them to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency.
