A quote from the memoirs of Julia Balbilla written in 136 AD comparing the wild beast fights of the provincial arenas to those in Rome.

"Everything in Rome is of the best. In the provinces I have seen shows where the much-heralded fierce beast from the forests and the deserts of the empire turn out to be a few wild cats, or a scabby, toothless, stinking Bear and a half blind Ox covered in flies. At the circus here in Rome creatures are magnificent and unfamiliar specimens, their coats glossy, their rage untempered, enough meat on them to feed a village. The crowds are spoiled by variety and all this goes on for days on end."
