My office and I had a great time this afternoon connecting our neighbors to community resources, union jobs and legal assistance for those seeking a pardon or expungement of a harmful criminal record. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

Happening today! See you soon ✊🏾

One week until my office's Second Chance Fair!

Having a criminal record should not be a life sentence. Everyone deserves a second chance and the opportunity to thrive!

Please help me spread the word to anyone who could benefit from expungement or employment resources.

CHOP doctor struck and killed by speeding driver as she biked near Rittenhouse Square 19/07/2024

As a Philadelphian and a cyclist, I’ve been profoundly saddened by the death of Dr. Friedes. Our city must take traffic safety for cyclists seriously. We all deserve safe streets and the peace of mind to commute without losing our lives.

I am incredibly grateful for the stakeholders, advocates and legislators who fought hard alongside me in my campaign to launch a statewide Tenant Right to Counsel program. Proud to celebrate this win back in Philly today with you all!

This $2.5 million down payment is just the first step. To win a true statewide Right to Counsel for all working families, we need to spend 10 times more. Let’s celebrate this historic win, and fight hard to expand funding in future years to serve every tenant in need!

Solidarity forever with the Jefferson SPs United who are fighting for a fair contract! Jefferson’s Standardized Patients — who the University could not operate without — haven’t had a raise in their base pay in 16 years. Unacceptable. I will always stand with university workers across this city standing up to billion dollar, union busting institutions and fighting for what they’re worth.

Last night, we finally passed a state budget into law and I’m extraordinarily proud to share we won $2.5 MILLION to launch the historic Pennsylvania Right to Counsel Program!

This is a huge win for tenants, workers and families. By providing free legal aid to low-income tenants, Right to Counsel will prevent tens of thousands of evictions and pave the way for a Commonwealth where all of our neighbors have the tools they need to defend against displacement.

Thank you to the movement of housing advocates who carried this proposal over the finish line, including my coprime sponsors Representative Smith-Wade-El and Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler, Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, PA Stands Up and more.

I look forward to expanding funding for the program in future years to support every family in need. Housing is a human right!

10/07/2024

Congratulations Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler! This is a huge win for our schools, our workers and our climate.

A bill I introduced in the House, Solar for Schools, just PASSED THE SENATE with bipartisan support, 42-7!

The bill goes back to the House for final approval before hitting the Governor’s desk. We are so close to delivering clean energy, good-paying jobs, and big savings to school districts across PA! 🌞👷🛠️

Thousands of Pennsylvanians are still serving time for unnecessary and racist ma*****na laws. As we move towards legalization, we must not only expunge past records but fight for the resentencing of those who are still incarcerated. It’s time for our neighbors to come home.

Librarians, curators, developers and other staff at the Penn Libraries are unionizing and the Philly House Delegation is proud to have their back.

It's powerful to see this AFSCME District Council 47 Local continue to grow, alongside Penn’s historic wave of labor organizing. Penn must stop their union busting and come to the table soon to bargain in good faith. Unions belong at Penn!

01/07/2024

As we fight hard for mass liberation, it's essential that we also do the critical work of supporting our incarcerated neighbors when they come home and reunite with our community. That's why my office will be holding a Second Chance Fair.

Stop by Christy Rec on Saturday July 20th, between 11am and 3pm to meet legal professionals who can assist with record expungement, network with hiring employers and more.

Everyone deserves a second chance!

Housing and Education Go Hand in Hand in Our Vision for a Healthy Pennsylvania - Bucks County Beacon 27/06/2024

We’re close to securing billions of desperately needed dollars in basic education funding in this year's state budget. But what happens outside the walls of the classroom is just as important as what happens inside them.

To give our children the future they truly deserve, we must also make a commitment to guaranteeing safe and affordable housing for all.

Grateful to lay out a vision in Bucks County Beacon for winning housing justice in this year's budget with Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler & Rep. Izzy Smith-Wade-El.

Housing and Education Go Hand in Hand in Our Vision for a Healthy Pennsylvania - Bucks County Beacon The success of our students in school is inextricably linked to their ability to maintain housing.

Every day, in every county of Pennsylvania, families without access to adequate legal representation are evicted from their homes. My bill, H.B. 2443, would create a Tenant Right to Counsel program to provide legal representation to low-income tenants across the Commonwealth.

Governor Shapiro has already proposed 5 million dollars in funding and now, I’m fighting hard this budget season, alongside my friends Rep. Smith-Wade-El and Rep. Fiedler and housing organizations like PA Stands Up and Community Legal Services of Philadelphia to get it across the finish line.

Out here with One Pennsylvania and Renters United Philadelphia / Inquilinxs en la Lucha standing up to Odin Properties and corporate landlords across the city!

As one tenant put it, our neighbors are not just cash cows who can be taken advantage of to pay for our landlords’ luxury cars and beach homes. These are OUR homes. We all deserve safe living conditions and respect.

Holding corporate landlords accountable is critically important, which is why I introduced the LLC Transparency Act. Creating a comprehensive database of LLC owners will give city officials the tools they need to crack down on bad landlords and stand up for tenants.

This week is going to be historically hot. Please stay safe out there! You can call the Philly Heatline at (215) 765-9040 or check out the article below to find city resources.

It's time to take serious action to address the climate crisis. We can't let this become the new normal.

Thank you to Savage Sisters Recovery for your leadership in harm reduction and for providing my district office with a training on harm reduction best practices, including fentanyl testing and administering narcan.

Our city is facing a public health crisis — on average, 2-3 Philadelphians overdose every day. I'm grateful that our office is better trained in how to show up for our community.

West and Southwest Philly tenants face surging rents and unaccountable landlords every day. I'm working hard to create a statewide Tenant Right to Counsel in this year's budget which will give thousands of families the tools they need to fight evictions and stay in their homes.

No matter what billionaires like Jeff Yass and Jay-Z say, school voucher programs have no place in Pennsylvania.

We must send billions of state dollars to our public schools which serve working class students and their families.

Public dollars belong in public schools!

07/06/2024

June is budget month and my colleagues, and I are working to pass a budget with a historic increase in funding for our public schools, mass transit, and home repairs.

I’m also fighting hard to create a new, statewide Tenant Right to Counsel Program which will provide legal representation to tenants fighting evictions across the Commonwealth. Right to Counsel has already been wildly successful in Philadelphia and has helped thousands of tenants avoid displacement. Let’s take it statewide!

From the Black Bottom to the UC Townhomes, our community has spent generations fighting gentrification and displacement caused by Penn's campus.

Today, we won funding for permanently affordable housing at 40th and Market.

Thank you Councilmember Jamie Gauthier for your work on this!

The Angel Davis Eviction Accountability Bill would be a major step forward for Philly's housing movement. Simple licensing requirements will ensure eviction agents are accountable to the public. Let's get this done!

I'm proud to be joined by Angel Davis as the Committee on Housing, Neighborhood Development, and the Homeless considers our bill in her name that brings safety, compassion, and accountability to evictions.

It was my honor to welcome the family of my predecessor, Rep. James R. Roebuck, to the State House for our resolution ceremony commemorating his legacy. Jim was a cherished West Philly community member and vital leader in public education who fought hard for students and children across the Commonwealth.

As we enter budget season, let us remember Jim’s clarity of purpose when we take on the work of fulfilling our constitutional mandate to provide our children with the education they deserve. I believe that would be the most fitting tribute of all.

Great to join socialist lawmakers across the city advocating the School Board to install HEPA air filters in every classroom! All of our children deserve safe, fresh air. I appreciate Philly DSA taking the lead on this crucial campaign for the health of our city's working class, Black and Brown young people.

While I was there, I was also proud to support activists protesting Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian censorship and hate in our public schools. Students and teachers in this city must not be shut down and retaliated against for speaking out against the genocide in Gaza.

I was horrified to learn more than 60 individuals have come forward to share they were sexually abused by staff at juvenile detention facilities. More facilities are not the solution to our broken juvenile justice system.

Grateful to join Philly DSA and a coalition of 35 organizations and elected officials across the city urging Philadelphia Board of Education to place a HEPA air filter in every classroom.

Philly's childhood asthma rate is double the national average. Our children can't wait any longer.

While workers at Penn struggle to make ends meet, Penn union busts, hoards their 20 billion dollar endowment and violently shuts down protests against genocide. This exploitation and unaccountable behavior needs to end.

Thank you to Nicolas O'Rourke and the Philly City Council for passing a resolution to celebrate the Coalition of Workers at Penn. Unions belong at Penn!
