It was one of the most beautiful films I’d ever seen because although I already know what my students face in their day-to-day lives in an English-speaking country, it was truly a deeper experience seeing the the struggles of a woman who faced her lack of English skills.

😔The woman in this movie faced ridicule from her own husband and children on a daily basis because her English was not as developed as theirs.

😔She avoided attending her children's parents’ evenings, because she couldn’t understand the teachers.

😔She couldn’t her her children with their homework, which left her feeling inadequate.

😔She could not participate in social gatherings with family and friends, so she felt embarrassed and left out

😔She felt disrespected, and this was the worst feeling of all.

I was so moved by this film and I could only think of all the people who are going through the same thing

and all I wanted to do was HELP.

What’s missing in the average English course???

Believe it or not, when I work with students on their communication skills, they tend to find a lot of love for reading books and magazines and listening to a variety of authentic material.

WHAT?

Reading and listening is what they end up carrying forward in their daily routines because this ignites a passion for the English language.

English is then no longer ONLY about trying to speak perfectly for work purposes, nor solely about building confidence…

Well, while confidence and accuracy improve A LOT, they soon develop a new found passion and love for English.

I love to see this spark in my students, because it brings a whole new dimension to their learning abilities, especially their speaking skills...And they make so much progress at a much quicker pace. WOW 🤩

Think about the following words. What’s the difference? These are some of the things that make the English language so interesting!

A mind map is a fantastic way to organise and focus your ideas and produce even better ones! I often encourage mind-mapping for planning A Level Spanish essays as well as IELTS writing tasks.

This is an example of the initial steps of mind mapping. Further, more detailed ideas would then bounce off the ideas already written. The final step would then be to choose and collate the most suitable ideas for the essay itself.

A mind map is a fantastic way to organise and focus your ideas to create even better ones! I often encourage my A Level students to use mind mapping for essay writing.

A learner of English recently said to me that he was working very hard to learn English. His method was to learn 50 words a day. While his commitment is commendable, unfortunately, his method only led to failure because he struggled to recall all those words.

Ultimately, language is learned when it is PRODUCED via speaking and writing after it has been acquired by reading and listening ACTIVELY.

Language lesson!

This shows how sentences can be expanded using punctuation, static verbs to express feeling, and conjunctions, leading to complex and improved sentences.

Thank you for the beautiful feedback from a learner I worked with who wanted to keep up her Spanish language skills. It’s great to know that the drive I have and attention I pay to my learners is noticed.

This was a fun lesson I delivered recently. My student is a young Chinese girl preparing for the Cambridge PET exam. I asked for the past tense of the verb 'do'. She said 'doed' (dood) !!
Well she was along the right lines of how regular verbs are formed in the past simple! (I wonder if that was a deliberate response??)

Such fun!

An interesting connection between the English language and a universal experience of exquisite yet temporal British weather, which only leaves you feeling a sense of belonging!
