What should we discuss or research today?
What do people want to talk about

Raw feeding and the downward slope on the quality of the meat that is being used?

Does matter what the subject (has to be dog related of course) comment below

18/02/2023

AATU chicken 80/20 £70 for 10kg

80% Chicken (50% Chicken, 30% Dehydrated Chicken), Sweet Potato, Chickpeas, Peas, Lucerne, Chicken Stock, Salmon Oil, Carrots, Tomato, Chicory, Tapioca, Apple, Pear, Cranberry, Blueberry, Mulberry, Orange, Bilberry, Cowberry, Parsley, Peppermint, Spirulina, Seaweed, Oregano, Sage, Marjoram, Thyme, Chamomile, Rosehip, Stinging Nettle, Yucca, Marigold, Aniseed, Fenugreek, Cinnamon, Hip & Joint Care (Glucosamine 178mg/kg, MSM 178mg/kg, Chondroitin 125mg/kg).

Right so we can see here that the actual meat content is 80% and the rest of the food is made up of vegetables and herbs all of which are listed
This food contains no cereal and all the ingredients are natural

This is one of my top 5 recommended biscuit/kibble

18/02/2023

Royal Canin Medium Breed Adult £70 for 15kg

Composition: dehydrated poultry protein, maize flour, maize, wheat flour, animal fats, dehydrated pork protein, wheat, hydrolysed animal proteins, beet pulp, fish oil, minerals, soya oil, yeasts and parts thereof, hydrolysed yeast (source of manno-oligo-saccharides (0.05%)).

Right so here we have a well know brand of food that is regularly suggested by vets

None of the ingredients have the percentages but as we already know they are listed in order so we know the first ingredient in this food is at least meat based not cereal, but Dehydrated Poultry Protein this is often used as a 'technical' term for meat meal. Digest/hydrolysed protein is a powder turned into a spray to coat the kibble adding flavour and enhancing smells to entice even the fussiest of dogs. So not really meat and definitely doesn’t contain any fresh meat (muscle meat)
So even though this food is a lot more expensive, this is not nutritionally any more beneficial.

Asda Hero Complete Chicken, Rice & Vegetables Dry Adult Dog Food £10 for 12kg

Ingredients
Cereals (4% Rice in the Rice Component), Meat and Animal Derivatives 24% (4% Chicken in the Chicken Component), Vegetables (4% Peas in the Pea Component), Oils and Fats, Derivatives of Vegetable Origin, Minerals, Dried Chicory Root (0.1%), Total Meat and Animal derivatives 24%, Chicken component typically 20%, Rice component typically 20%, Pea component typically 80% of product

Right so what can we see from the above
We know that cereal is the highest percentage ingredient in this food and doesn’t give you the actual percentage.
The next is meat and animal derivatives which we know doesn’t actually mean that it contains and actual muscle meat and for a chicken based food chicken is only 4% of this
They actually try to trick you by saying later that the total meat and animal derivatives is 24% so some would think that it contains 2 lots but that’s not the case

So yes it’s cheap but it is a really poor quality ingredient food

4th Tip
And one of the best

A little long but I feel it needs to be explained in full

Meat and Animal Derivatives
It is the technical and legal catch-all term used for any part of a warm-blooded, land-based animal found in your pet’s food or treats. However, manufacturers will only tend to use it on their packaging if they have something to hide.
Think about it. You’re in the marketing team of a big pet food company. Your product has 25% dried chicken. Which of these will look better on your packaging:
25% Dried Chickenor25% Meat and Animal Derivatives
They are both allowed. They are both legal. It’s clear which is the obvious choice though, isn’t it?
If you have a good product with quality ingredients, you are going to want to make that clear to your customers.
So, why would a company use the vaguer alternative? It’s because they can hide behind it.
The term ‘meat and animal derivatives’ covers all warm-blooded land animals. Generally, the bits of the carcass that remain once the 'good bits' have been taken out for human consumption; usually predominantly made up of offal rather than 'conventional meat' (aka lungs, spleen, heart etc). It can also include the rest of the carcass in its entirety - beaks, feathers and hooves included (aka 'animal derivatives').

A key aspect to this is that the manufacturer can change the animal source at any time and can use any combination of meat and animal derivatives. Therefore, at the time of production, they will use whichever ingredients are the cheapest. This equates to poor quality, changeable ingredients.
Not ideal for you; you don’t know what you’re purchasing from one bag to the next. Not ideal for your dog; an unpredictable, poor quality food is never advisable, particularly for sensitive dogs.
The same applies to ‘Derivatives of Vegetable Origin’, ‘Fish Derivatives’, ‘Cereals’, ‘Various Sugars’ and other vague terms.
Also be aware of ‘meat and animal derivatives (total 20%, including 4% chicken)’. Whilst you have the knowledge that at least 4% is specifically from chickens, the remaining 16% could be any other meat protein source – and could be very different to the next pack you buy.

16/02/2023

Tip 3

Dehydrated Poultry Protein this is often used as a ‘technical’ term for meat meal
Digest/hydrolysed protein is a powder turned into a spray to coat the kibble adding flavour and enhancing smells to entice even the fussiest of dogs.

16/02/2023

Tip 2

Ingredients (Composition)
Ingredients are always listed in descending order of weight (biggest ingredient first).
Meat should usually be the first and therefore greatest ingredient.

A good quality food will list all the ingredients by their specific name, rather than vague descriptions of ingredients such as ‘meat and animal derivatives’, ‘cereals’ or ‘vegetable derivatives’. If your pet suffers from food allergies, then you will need to check the ingredients carefully and you may wish to look for a food that only contains one source of meat/protein (single source) to make food trials easier.

Right here goes

I am going to do this in broken down bits so that’s it’s easier to take in and understand

So Commerical Dog foods here is the first tip:

The first five ingredients of your dog's food should always start with protein.
Dogs are omnivores, so they receive energy and nutrients from both plant and animal nutrients. But protein is essential to their muscle and tissue development, immune system health, energy, and healthy skin and nails.

Take a look at your dogs food and what’s the first ingredient? What’s the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th 🧐

If your following the posts please leave a comment as I would like to get some engagement on the posts

Also to anyone that has any questions then please feel free to ask

Tomorrow I am going to do an ingredients comparison on 3 different dog foods

- Asda’s Hero
- Royal Canin
- AATU 80/20

I am doing this so people can see that just because the food says complete or is recommended by a vet doesn’t mean it anymore nutritional to your dog unless the ingredients are fresh

I will explain some of the key words that are used and what they actually mean

Keep an eye on the page for more tips for a healthier less processed food for your dogs

Happy New Year everyone we are working toward a better 2022 through hard working and determination.

The amount of people who have contacted me recently for Whelping information and to discuss the options is amazing, thank you to every who recommends and uses my service.
My previous customers will take president over any new clients but I do operate on a first come first serve basis so please book your dates well in advance to avoid disappointment. If you contact me I can pencil in your dates, and on confirmation when the deposit is paid this is then changed to actual booking.
No matter how busy I get I will only take 1 litter at a time (this is more so I know deep down no matter what your litter has had my undivided attention)

I am currently booked from 28th January for around 10 weeks (if everything goes to plan we all know things happen) but I am free from now until the 26th January and we have the diary out and in full swing with pencil and pens at the ready

Photos from Dogz Supreme Body ‘N’ Bowl's post 30/12/2021

If you want to pay me minimum wage per hour then I think you will find this works out to be a lot more than my weekly charges.

National minimum wage is currently £8.51

Not sure how many of you will have seen an actual birth so thought I would share the amazing experience
I only managed to video 1 pup as things got a little hectic and momma ended up with 14 pups in total

25/10/2021

Over the moon to announce the arrival of 14 😳 healthy happy little Curse Bundles
Curse was brought to me on Tuesday 19th for pre whelp observation she was due to whelp Tuesday the 26th October but Mother Nature had other ideas, luckily in the short space of time we had formed a good bond so she allowed me to lend a hand and is happy to have me close to hand.
Curse is one of the best mums and is making my job a whole lot easier but with 14 pups and curse not wanting me to rotate in groups, making sure all the pups are having a turn at the milk bar is a task in its self.
I would like to thank the owner of Curse for trusting in me and knowing I would give both Curse and her babies the best care around
