“I’m a badass vessel of life”

Wise words from my cohost Nikki Bergen. 🤍

I posted this comment from Nikki for this first time when I was 20 weeks pregnant, with no idea what my birthing experience had in store for me.

Now, 5 months postpartum and having experienced all that I have, this statement has a whole new meaning.

Writing it out again, it got me thinking, what happens when the vessel is now empty? What am I left with? Just an empty vessel?

Sometimes, when our bodies experience traumatic birth experiences, we often feel like our bodies failed us. I came out of my labours with Piper & Clark feeling so empowered and left feeling even stronger and more in touch with my body than ever before.

Following the twins labour, my vessel felt empty. I felt like my body had failed me and it shook my core beliefs. It felt like I had to get to know an entirely new body. Taking baby steps (pun intended) as I finally was able to move again, workout again, have s*x again. It’s been mentally and physically the most challenging time of my life. With every passing day, I feel stronger and after all that my body has gotten me through in bringing these beautiful babies into this world, the statement still holds true. I am a badass vessel that carried and delivered life. 👊🏻

If this scar could talk…❤️‍🩹

Adam took this photo last night, I looked at it later feeling so proud of how far I’ve come.

I couldn’t look at my incision for weeks after my labour let alone post a picture of it for everyone to see. It pained me to look at it. To me, it represented my body failing me. I felt like it couldn’t possibly be mine.

Slowly I have come to recognize that this mark is so much more than a scar. It represents Violet and her entry into this world. It represents her strength and my strength. And although I’m still working through a lot, this scar represents a chapter in our family’s story and I take pride in that.

I didn’t know what to expect with a c-birth because I blocked out any discussion around it throughout my pregnancy. In my mind it wasn’t happening. I was completely unprepared for the after affects and simply amazed that there weren’t more people talking about how absolutely awful and incredibly challenging it is recovering from this surgery.

So now I want to share my learnings.

In our latest We Go There podcast episode, we discuss all the things I wish I had known and all the tips I’ve learnt along the way to help with caesarean recovery. Check it out on Spotify, Apple or Google podcasts - link in bio.

“Congratulations everyone, we saved a baby's life today”. 🥹

Though I can’t remember much of Violet’s emergency c-section (following Nash’s vaginal delivery), these words spoken by my OB have left a forever mark on me that is very hard to explain. Today I try to put my experience into words.

I had a serious vulnerability hangover after recording this episode with my cohost, Nikki. I found myself up in the middle of the night replaying what I recall from my experience over and over, judging and comparing it to other birth stories I’ve heard, trying to talk myself out of sharing it because I came out of this experience with 2 healthy beautiful babies, so shouldn’t I just shut away my experience and be grateful???

The truth is, what I experienced was trauma and it nearly broke me. If sharing this helps even one person feel seen and heard and understood, I must share.

When I started with Nikki we committed to sharing and educating women on ALL things in hopes to remove the shame around topics that impact women and to create a space that supports one another.

Trauma from labour impacts as many as 1 in 3 women and often women live these experiences and then are expected to push the impacts of it to the side while we care for our new baby and family.

We try to lessen our experiences and move forward because we feel we have no other choice. But trauma can manifest itself in so many different ways and by sharing my story, I hope to help give others permission to feel their experiences, know that they are not alone and that you deserve the space and time (as much time as you need) to heal. ✨🙏🏻

Thank you Nikki for creating such a safe space to share my story.

Postpartum recovery is really hard! 🥹

This week was a LOT. In fact this entire postpartum experience has been a lot.

On Tuesday I started to experience extremely sharp shooting pains, worse than anything I had felt since my emergency c-section in my lower right abdomen. I tried everything to avoid having to leave my teeny babies and go to emerge but ultimately it was advised that in order to rule out appendicitis I needed to get a CT scan.

I was an absolute mess 😭. In pain, hormones raging, worried what would happen if I needed another surgery and missing my babies like crazy. I tried so hard to keep a positive mindset, willing this whole experience to be seamless and easy. Thankfully, we had the most kind nurse check us in who empathized with our situation and made sure we saw a doctor as soon as possible. They were able to rule out appendicitis and link the pain to a nerve issue.

After having really positive postpartum experiences with Piper and Clark, this has given me an entirely new perspective and appreciation for what mother’s go through. 💛

From the moment we are home from the hospital it is all about the babies. There needs to be much more attention, resources and care for mothers postpartum, especially after major abdominal surgery. If it wasn’t for my midwives supporting and guiding me through this experience, I would be completely lost.

Beyond grateful for the people who dedicate their time and platforms to educating and helping postpartum mothers including my We Go There co-host 🥰

Please share any postpartum accounts that you recommend below, I’ll include some recommended to me also.

“It’s just super freaking hard, Lexi”

These simple but wise words were said to me this past weekend from someone I respect and admire in both business and as a mom with 3 young kids (two of them being twins).

This weekend I officially crashed. 😩

I have been so fortunate that I have been feeling really good during my pregnancy and am really grateful to have both twins growing healthy with everything going smoothly. So, naturally I’ve been doing all the things and pretty much going about the last 30 weeks as if everything was normal, but also while growing 2 little humans inside me. After ignoring everyone, it has all caught up with me.

Being pregnant period is really really hard work and the self-inflicted pressure of wanting to continue to grow my business and have everything in a great place for when the twins arrive has taken precedence over listening to the signs that I’m pushing too hard and need to slow down.

My brilliant coach sent me some impactful words yesterday that are helping me to reframe this all, and I want to share it here for anyone who is finding life really hard right now. If you’re feeling drained and you've been pushing too hard, this is for you.

- I am worthy of rest
- I am worthy of calm
- I am worthy of ease
- I am worthy that everything is always working out for me and all is well

I keep telling myself that rest is also productive time. I’m working on holding more compassion and prioritizing myself, in whatever way I can, knowing that this will only contribute to me achieving my goals. 💛

5 weeks ➡️ 18 weeks 👶🏼👶🏼

Our bodies are truly amazing.

My cohost of Nikki said it best following our most recent podcast about diastasis, she said:

“I am a badass vessel of life!” 👊🏻

I’m truly amazed at the changes my body has experienced in just 4 short months.

One of the most common questions asked when I share the news that we are expecting twins is “where will they go?” or “how big is your belly going to get” and truthfully, I have absolutely no idea. Right now, I’m the same size now at 4 months as I was at 6 months with Clark, so likely, pretty damn big!!!

What I know for sure is our bodies are amazing, I’m a badass vessel of life and I trust the strength of my body to support the growth of our little babes until they are ready to entire our lives. ✨💕

Today on International Women’s Day, I wanted to record a message from my future self, to my daughter, Piper.

I dream of the day where our children get to live and thrive in a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Please take a listen… 💛

Dear Piper,
March 8th, 2036 –

Happy International Women’s Day.

I promised you by the time you were 18, the world would be different and I would do my part to contribute to this change.

I promised you as women, we would be treated as equals. That there would be no such thing as gender inequality and pay inequity. 💛

I promised you that female CEO’s would run 50% of our fortune 500 companies not 8% and that women would make up far more than 12% of the world’s wealthiest people.

I promised you that we would have female Presidents and Prime Ministers leading the way for our countries.

I promised you that women-led businesses would receive 20 times more than the 2% of VC funding that they received in 2021.

I promised you that you wouldn’t have to choose between your career and your family, that you could do both and that we would live in a world where that was supported.

I promised you that when you walked into a boardroom that being a woman would work FOR you and not against you.

Piper, years ago I shared with you a dream. A dream of a life where no glass ceilings existed. They had all been shattered – the glass was broken.

Welcome to that day my love – opportunities are endless, follow your passion, believe in yourself because you can make a difference too and pave the way for the next generation. 🙏🏻✨💛

Family moments captured in a very special place. 🤍🤍🤍

I took a moment yesterday to reflect on our family and how grateful I am for both my direct family and extended friends / family. It’s hard to not get caught up in the chaos of it all while quickly passing through the days. But as I’ve been told many times, the days are long but the years are short, so I’m really trying to do better and take all these precious moments and savour them while I can.

Happy Family Day 💛

WE GO THERE

Nikki and I started this podcast in hopes of providing a safe space where there is no judgment and no question, literally NO question is off limits. 🤍

At the beginning of the lockdown, we shared a common realization that too many of us are feeling embarrassed, alone or shameful around experiences that are actually very commonly shared amongst many but somehow not really talked about. 🤫

We want to change that and open up the conversation.

From painful s*x, mommy brain, anxiety, partner resentment, raging hormones, vanishing libido, postpartum vaginal healing, infertility and bladder leaks, we’ve experienced it all and aren’t afraid to share – there is no judgement here. We ask the questions and interview the top experts to get the info we all deserve.

Because knowledge is power. We are going there, unfiltered! And we're so excited you're here. 🤍

We’ve launched our latest Season 3 and you can check it out or online at wegotherepodcast.com

Let us know any topics or experts you want us to interview, below!
