Howdy friends (new and old)! I suppose I do one of these every once in a while to either introduce or reintroduce myself to the new faces (and old) around these parts.

I’m so glad you’ve decided to join me. My name is Taryn and I homestead in the wild west state of New Mexico. I’ve been here pretty much my whole life. I’m married to a good man and have a wonderful 14 year old daughter.

I have been homesteading consistently for about a decade now and have learned lots along the way and that’s what I love to share here. Agriculture, animals, growing your own food, preserving said food, eating seasonally, scratch baking and cooking, and overall western lifestyle are all things you will find here.

So, welcome! Let’s see where everyone around here comes from. Based on my analytics I have followers from ALL over. Drop your state below so we can connect and maybe you can connect with other likeminded individuals near you!

I have a lot of fun things in the works, including a giveaway! Stay tuned!

Link in my bio to check out some of my merch! Hoodies and tees make some great layerin pieces this time of year! Yeehaw! 🤠

The winter gardener. Up in this country we have a short growing season. I’m already starting to see gardening content pushed out which isn’t something I’m used to. We still have quite some time before seeds even start.

Learning how to grow your own food is something I share a lot about here and I would love to help you start on your journey of growing some nutritious, delicious food!

For now this winter gardener is taking seed stock and getting myself organized. Do I need to purchase any seeds? Which ones? What do I plan to grow? Etc. Ultimately the goal is to save as much as my own seed as possible to help cut costs! I’m so excited that this year I have quite a few seeds saved! One of the first things to ask yourself when starting your garden is what do you and your family eat the most of? Then plant those items!

Happy to announce my new merch pop up shop! Link is in my bio! We got tees + hoodies yall! 🤠 They make some great layerin pieces!

Happy winter, friends!!

🍏 Skillet Snickerdoodle Apple Cobbler 🍏

Cooked apples are topped with snickerdoodle cookie dough and baked for a delicious anytime dessert. Honestly the only way I make apple cobbler anymore 🤤

For the apples 🍏
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 6-8 Granny Smith apples (I used the allles I canned during fall harvest)
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon is superior 🤌🏼)

For the cobbler
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (only use around here!)
- 2 cups flour

For the topping
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1-2 teaspoons cinnamon

Make apples. Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large skillet. I used a 12 inch one. Add sliced apples, brown sugar, and 1 tsp cinnamon. Toss to coat. Cook for 5-8 minutes stirring often until the apples just begin to cook. Set aside and make topping.

Cream 3/4 cup butter and 3/4 cup sugar in a bowls of a stand mixer. Use the paddle attachment. Beat in egg and extract. Mix in baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Slowly mix in flour.

Spoon cookie dough evenly over apples. Mix remaining sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over top of dough. Bake at 350 for approx 25 minutes until the cookie dough starts to brown. Serve alone or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. 🤤

Seasonal checklist: Winter. This is the time of year when we can take pleasure in our earlier labors and feast on the flavors of spring and summer that are filling the shelves of our kitchen pantry. It is a time to nurture ourselves with delicious foods and tempting sweets.

I’ve been speaking on eating seasonally but what about our thoughts. Winter is a time of rest and slowing down internally. Externally we complete another year and the eternal cycle once again completes itself as we greet the coming of another spring.

In the bathroom: I made a batch of pine+cinnamon infused oil a while back. A great bath oil for winter dry skin. Also an amazing massage oil. My batch is still sitting and gaining in scent. It’s delightful to smell and I will be straining soon for use.

For though the winter slows us down in the country… there is still plenty to focus on in home + health. Time to read the seed catalogs- and dream. Planning out the summer garden my friends. 🪴 Happy homesteading!

“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” - Genesis 8:22 🕊️
