Here are key facts on AFRICOM in Somalia

In 2001, George W. Bush started funding different factions in Somalia further fueling conflict and violence, which provoked resistance to the tyranny.

AFRICOM in Somalia was officially launched in 2007 and has been attacking Somalia for the last 14 years, long before the existence of extremist organizations in the country.

There are at least 2,682 deaths from airstrikes and other forms of attacks commited by AFRICOM and the CIA, but only 5 casualties have been officially declared.

AFRICOM doesn't engage with victims, families or witnesses to assess casualties and damage, and the U.S. has never compensated non-extremist victims.

About 493,000 people have been displaced since 2019.
U.S. troops have been relocated from Somalia to other parts of East Africa in January, but are continuing to launch aggressive attacks and airstrikes, including on the first day of Black History Month.

There is interest in Somalia because of oil reserves and petroleum, also because of its significant geopolitical location on the Indian Ocean as an access point to the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf of Aden.
