Hello dear parents,

Alam natin na bago pa man pumasok ang ating mga chikiting sa eskwela ay natututo na silang magsalita, magsulat o di kaya, ay magbasa. Ito ay tinatawag na EARLY LITERACY.

Ang EARLY LITERACY ay isang proseso ng child development na nagsisimula sa mga unang taon ng buhay ng isang bata. Ito ay nabubuo at nahahasa sa pamamagitan ng mga positibong interaksyon at relasyon nila sa mga literacy materials at mga tao sa kanilang paligid.

Kahit baby pa lamang sila, o di kaya ay nasa mga edad 1 hanggang 3 taong gulang, maaari na silang maturuan at ma-expose sa mga gawaing magpapalawig ng EARLY LITERACY.

Ang paghawak at pag-ngatngat ng mga libro, paglipat ng mga pahina at pagtingin at pagturo sa mga litrato sa libro ay ilan lamang sa mga EARLY LITERACY behaviors na kanilang natututunan. Sa kalaunan, na-dedevelop ang kanilang pag-intindi sa mga istorya at sila na mismo ang magbabasa o magtatanong pa tungkol dito.

Kapag ito ay naging bahagi ng kanilang routine, nagiging natural din ang pagbuo ng kanilang hilig sa pagbabasa . Ang pagbabasa ng libro ay isang mabisang paraan upang suportahan ang kanilang LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT. Bonus din na nagkakaroon ng bonding time ang mga bata at mga magulang at tagapag-alaga tuwing reading time.

What is the difference between Developmental Monitoring or Surveillance and Developmental Screening?

As part of your regular wellness child visits with your pediatrician, developmental monitoring or surveillance is routinely done. Developmental milestone checklists are usually used during the consultation.
However, specific developmental concerns may arise during these wellness check-ups, which may either be raised by the parents or caregivers or, as observed by your pediatrician.

What now?

Developmental screening may be done, using formal, validated screening tools, to determine if the child is indeed AT RISK or NOT AT RISK of having developmental problems. As recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Philippine Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (PSDBP), all children age 9 months, 18 months and 30 months should undergo Developmental Screening. Moreso, it can be done whenever specific developmental concerns are apparent.

What's next?

If the child screens positive or is AT RISK of having developmental problems, the child will be referred for EARLY intervention and referrals to developmental and behavioral pediatricians and other allied health professionals. In this way, these problems will be addressed in a prompt manner, to bring about positive changes in the child's development.

Here in Padre Pio Children's Clinic, we are one with you in making sure that your child is growing and developing well. The clinic will soon offer Developmental Screening for our patients.
