Determining the Future of the Leaburg Hydroelectric Project 09/10/2022

Are you aware of the upcoming decision about the future of the Leaburg Hydroelectric Project? The EWEB Board will be providing direction to staff in the coming months and I am interested in your thoughts. Do you have an opinion about the future of this project?

The National Weather Service has issued a “Red Flag Warning” starting at 11 a.m. Thursday to 10 p.m. Friday for part of our electric service territory. This means low humidity, high temperatures, and erratic winds increase the risk of a wildfire starting and quickly spreading.

High winds are especially problematic in that they create more vegetation contacts with our electric wires, increasing spark potential, and they cause fires to spread faster than they can be contained.

To reduce the risk that EWEB powerlines become a potential ignition point, we are changing the protective settings on our equipment in the following areas:

* All lower McKenzie Valley EWEB customers from Hayden Bridge/Camp Creek up to Leaburg.
* South of S 34th Ave & East of Willamette St. to the intersection of Old Dillard Rd and E 43rd Ave.
* South of Potter St. at the intersection of Amazon Dr. and north of E 43rd Ave. going east to Spring Blvd.

These protective measures include modifying high-voltage electric switches and relays. Just like a circuit breaker in your home, the switch senses when trouble occurs - such as a tree branch falling on the line - and shuts off the power.

Although the affected is above 2500 feet, which excludes most of our service territory, we have the discretion to be more conservative than the Red Flag suggests. EWEB has taken this voluntary measure in an abundance of caution for the safety of our customers and community.

WE DO NOT PLAN TO PROACTIVELY DE-ENERGIZE POWER LINES DURING THE RED FLAG EVENT.

However, turning up the sensitivity of the system to reduce the potential of sparking a fire increases the chances of power outages.

If a powerline in this area does shut off, EWEB will visually patrol the line to make sure equipment is safe to operate and work with public safety partners to ensure there is no active fire in the vicinity before re-energizing the line.

If you live in the affected area, please be advised that in the event of a power outage, restoration could take longer due to the need to visually inspect power lines.

During wildfire season and year-round, we encourage our customers to have an emergency plan in place and ensure your household is ready for a prolonged power or water disruption.

Wildfire safety information, including emergency plan checklists are available at eweb.org/wildfire.

Want to save money on water heating? 16/02/2021

EWEB residential electric customers can now purchase a Rheem heat pump water heater for as little as $225, a savings of more than $1,000.

Low income households can get even bigger discounts.

Heat pump water heaters are two to three times more efficient than conventional water heaters. A super-efficient Heat Pump Water Heater may reduce energy waste and hot water costs by 50 percent or more.
