Today is International Day for Action on Women’s Health. ACHL congratulates our women, especially those who have survived the insecurity in Nigeria and the COVID 19 pandemic. We draw attention to the challenges affecting the health of Nigerian women- about 79% of the 2.5 million displaced by Boko Haram insurgency are women. They have suffered social and economic deprivation, physical and mental health challenges, lack of access to health care and justice, food and nutrition insecurity and sexual exploitation. The COVID 19 pandemic has worsened the situation of women in Africa leading to mental breakdown, increase in gender-based violence and exploitation.
Yet there are no “genderised” COVID 19 policies and intervention plans which consider the plight of women. On this day, we call on the government and stakeholders to improve access to health and social justice for our women. We urge civil society and women groups to redouble advocacy efforts and to sensitize our women on the need for right-based services. As ACHL, we have used the COVID 19 Faith-based policy guidelines development process supported by KAICIID as an opportunity for inclusive programming and mainstreaming gender in the FBO COVID 19 intervention guidelines for Nigeria.

ACHL World AIDS Day Activity focusses on Global Solidarity and Shared Responsibility in the context of youth, women, and girls with a Symposium at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
It’s another World Aids Day today; the world is coming together once again in unity to show support for people living with and affected by HIV and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS.

Unfortunately, this year’s WAD is being marked at a time the world is facing a horrendous challenge – the COVID 19 pandemic. The COVID 19 pandemic has enabled us to learned great lessons, - that without good health all is lost and that tiny unseen virus can cause the world to stand still, and that there is a strong relationship between health and inequality, human rights, gender equality, social protection, and economic growth.
We have also learned that if we do not invest in health care, there will certainly come a time when the rich, the poor and underprivileged will scramble to access the dysfunctional health system in their countries as foreign health care facilities become inaccessible.
Riding on UNAIDS statement at this occasion, “COVID-19 has demonstrated that, during a pandemic, no one is safe until everyone is safe. Leaving people behind is not an option if we are to succeed. Eliminating stigma and discrimination, putting people at the centre, and grounding our responses in human rights and gender-responsive approaches are key to ending the colliding pandemics of HIV and COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the entrenched inequalities existing in our societies. This health crisis, like many others, is hitting the poorest and the most vulnerable the hardest.
We have seen how the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated the challenges faced by people living with HIV, women and girls and key populations, including in accessing life-saving health care, and how the crisis has widened the social and economic inequalities that increase the vulnerability of marginalized groups to HIV”
This is the background upon which the 2020 World Aids Day is being celebrated across the world.

At the Africa Centre for Health Leadership, we see the WAD 2020 as a great opportunity to work with stakeholders to make the changes necessary and do things differently towards defeating HIV and AIDS as a public health threat.
Keying into theme of this year’s WAD celebration; “Global solidarity, shared responsibility” we have focused our activities on the leadership and engagement of communities, especially the youths, women, and girls. As most of us are aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected women’s livelihoods, which have been disproportionally affected by lockdown measures, and lockdowns have resulted in an increase of violence against women in household settings. We have also witnessed a couple of days ago an unprecedented youth protest and uprising which led to the destruction of lives and properties of the government and citizens. These are signs that this is the time for action to improve youth leadership and inclusion of women, girls, and youth generally in political and program decision making, girls and young boys are at the Centre. It is for this reason that we organize this symposium
entitled:
“Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility: The Role and Responsibilities of Youths, Women and Girls”
During our presentation today, our esteemed resource persons explored two subthemes with the participants consisting largely of young people from the age of 10 – 19
1. Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility: The Role and Responsibilities of Youth, Women and Girls
2. Violence Against Women and Girls and HIV/AIDS Prevention: Implications for Youth Leadership and Engagement
The participants were empowered through these presentations to understand their roles and expectations as leaders who would contribute more actively to the prevention of HIV/AIDS and in the care and treatment of those sick from the disease and those affected. The students and their teachers will be learned life skills that has built their capacity to do what is right to live well, be protected and become better citizens.

As you may know in 2015, a new global strategy, “ALL IN” focusing on addressing the epidemic among adolescents and young people was launched to End Adolescent AIDS and aims to accelerate the global AIDS effort and end the AIDS epidemic among adolescents and young people by 2030. The key aspects of the ALL IN! aims to reduce HIV in adolescents and young people in 2020 by a 75% reduction in new HIV infection among adolescents; 65% reduction in AIDS related deaths among adolescents and ending stigma and discrimination. To achieve this, high impact programmes were introduced across countries especially in HIV testing, treatment and care in adolescents and young people and Combination HIV prevention for adolescents and young people
Looking back this The World AIDS day is an opportunity to assess what we have done so far as a nation and how we have brough young people and other marginalized groups onboard.
We continue to call on the Government to prioritize youth issues and build the capacity of young people to become equal partners in the response while only creating opportunities for economic empowerment of our teeming youth population.
Thanks to Principal and Staff of the School of Government Technical College, Ewet Offot, Nigeria who hosted ACHL and all the participants at the symposium today.
Special thanks to the Commissioner for Women Affairs, the Commissioner for Education and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS and their teams, the resource persons and all Key stakeholders who have contributed to making this a great success.
