0Maths
Maths learning platform that harnesses insights from psychology to help the kids who find maths hard. https://0maths.com
Thanks for the great response to the relaunch of the free & no sign up 0maths.com - that's awesome.
Some have pointed out that it was quite hard for kids to navigate to the questions. It's now much easier:
Look out for the direct link box - you can link children directly to a specific question type, or just for their year group, within the Scottish syllabus.
Check it out at https://0maths.com
Or, you can go directly to a year group from within the Scottish syllabus (and lock it from being accidentally changed by pupils), something like:
https://0maths.com/?yr=4&c=Sc
We've relaunched the free 0maths with no sign up and no ads.
All the maths anxiety, dyscalulia, dyslexia, ADD & ADHD adaptations are available as per the paid version. You get everything except the reporting features.
It's two easy clicks from the home page to dive in and have the full range of questions, worked solutions, difficulty levels, leading and following topics, etc etc.
The 2022 PISA rankings are out.
Scotland is a full year behind England, and in 3rd place of the 4 UK nations. Scotland is now 55th of the 81 nations taking part
The OECD average has fallen to 472, with claims it's due to the long shadow of Covid and phones in schools.
I found this article moving and inspiring.
Neurodivergence is a super power:
‘Kids with Down’s have no filter. I love it’: Allan Cockram, the man behind the Mighty Penguins A new film charts the rise of a west London football club for young players with Down’s Syndrome, and the team’s founder has a fairly extraordinary life story of his own, he tells Donald McRae
Our brains didn't evolve to do school work, they evolved over millions of years for survival on the savanna.
We need to position learning around what our ancestral brains love:
Visualisations - what we've seen makes more sense to us than what we've only heard about. That's why we start most topics with a visual representation.
Patterns - we start learning a multiplication table by making the patterns clear. Certain facts of numbers (ie that addition is commutative) become plainer by giving similar sums.
We learn by getting things right, not by getting them wrong - it was rare that our ancestors had one shot at a problem. They tried something; maybe it succeeded and maybe it didn't. If it didn't they could keep trying until they got it. On 0maths answers are rarely wrong; they're just not right yet.
Instant feedback - it takes far less time to learn not to grab thistles, than not to grab giant hogweed where the poison acts later on, after it's reacted with sunlight. By accepting answers right away (without a submit button), we make it immediate as grabbign a thistle
Support - our ancestors rarely had to solve problems on their own. On 0maths, children always have recourse to "show me how"
Repetition - solutions to problems we encounter daily are far more useful to us than problems that only came up once. For this reason, we incentivise children to periodically tackle topics they've already succeeded at.
There are a lot of maths websites out there but none of them love their users as much as we do. We embrace their differences and do what we can to nurture each one.
We're unique in offering no less than 10 customizable adaptations for conditions linked to poor performance in maths:

Does your child fall through the gaps? Please tell us.
Finally, after nearly 4 years, 0Maths is out of beta. Development hasn't stopped - there'll always be new material added, and tweaks, but it's thoroughly tested, reliable and game-changing.

The chance of a child having maths anxiety increases sharply if they have other learning difficulties. This is a great opportunity for educators as many of those learning difficulties can be mitigated
Puzzles encourage mathematical-style thinking without actually doing any maths. (Except for this one)

Understanding what's being asked is half the battle. That's why terms for worked solutions are now linked to a glossary, and glossary entries are interlinked.
The growth zone model of anxiety underpins the design of 0maths.
The bottom line is that once a pupil tips into the panic zone, their poor brain is flooded with adrenaline and they are fully equipped to run away and not at all able to reason a problem through. It takes about an hour for the adrenaline to level to go back down.
For this reason, 0maths problems start at an easy level. They can choose to make it harder or they can choose to do an easier foundational problem instead. Staying in control reduces anxiety.
Thanks so much to everybody who has let their classes loose on https://0maths.com Your feedback has shaped it into what it is today. It's still FREE (with no ads or sign up). Upgrades to kick off the new school year include:
* More support for SEN with built in Irlen filters, Open Dyslexia font, dark mode, jumbo text. The original maths anxiety focus has also been refined.
* Tweaks (and bux fixes) to questions, including improved visual aids & hints.
* More exercises to span the gaps between related topics
* Word definitions linked to from explanations.
I would love some more feedback from yourselves and your classes - children can send a message anonymously by clicking the @ at the top.
I hope everyone enjoyed their break.
https://0maths.com now helps you track and support your pupil learning journeys like never before:
* Shared difficulties
* Work diary
* Achieved times vs target times
* Individual strengths and weaknesses
At the moment I think it's largely moot as I need to persuade each council to do a DPIA before the log in features can be used (though I understand Moray may have cleared it :D ). If you'd like to be able to use 0maths in your classroom, please let me know which school you're at and your role there and I'll approach your council.
Thanks all for the generous feedback you've all given me through the years. It's truly kept me going.
Simon
