Have you ever wondered how the weather is created?
☁️☁️πŸŒ₯
Our Met Man (meteorologist) gave us an explanation on the weather seen on Tuesday.

"St Helena sits underneath a sub-tropical high throughout the year with cloud carried by South Easterly Trade Winds. With the influence of the sub-tropical high, dry air high up in the atmosphere will gradually sink creating an inversion somewhere in the atmosphere. Inversions are small slices of the atmosphere where there is a slight increase in temperature with height and will act as a "lid" for moisture to rise, this is one of the many reasons why thunderstorms are a rare phenomena for the island!

On the first picture - The orange dotted line shows where the inversion can be seen by the relatively straight line of stratocumulus (grey) cloud, moisture has reached the inversion and cannot go above the line.

When it comes to St Helena and it's airport, the main cloud in question for flight safety is cumulus cloud. Cumulus formed over the sea and depending on how moist the flow is, the base of the cloud can be higher (drier flow) or lower (moister flow). In this example, the flow is moist and almost level with King and Queen rock, which in relation to the runway is very low (~200 FT above the airport). This produces difficultly for inbound pilots to visually see the runway and land.

In the second picture - we can also note that the clouds over land are thicker than that off the coast, which could be suggested by the flow of air near the sea being forced to rise as it arrives at St Helena. Warm and moist air as it rises will cool (but retain it's moisture), meaning if it rises high enough, will condense into cloud. Because of how mountainous the terrain around St Helena is, we can also see the tops of the cumulus cells responding to the change in topography, meaning as it continues its way inland, the bases and tops of the cumulus rise in response to higher ground. Afterall, the air simply can't go into the ground!"

These pictures were taken by the pilots as they descended onto the runway on Tuesday.
