Sacred Mountain Kirtan

Sanskrit mantras which are transcendental sound vibrations which include many names by which we address the divine. But this is not about having a good voice or performing, it comes down to two principles: listening (sravanam) and then repeating (kirtanam) in order to glorify the divine in whatever way we conceive. It is simply a matter of connecting with your heart, leaving your ego behind and opening your voice. You don’t have to understand the mantra, just listen and repeat. The call and response causes a resonance within your own heart of joy and bliss. The mantras are short and simple and the tunes are easy to sing and catchy. And you may find yourself wanting to clap along with the rhythm, or even dance, which is encouraged! If you haven’t tried it before come along and join us, you will be warmly welcomed and will find it easy to leave self-consciousness at the door. In kirtan, we often sit cross legged on the floor, though if that’s not comfortable for you, chairs are usually available. The inspiration for our choice of “sacred mountain” as the name of our kirtan collective is two fold; firstly inspired by an invocation which says “Great Spirit, show us the mountains we only dare to dream of” and secondly from arguably the most sacred mountain in the world, Mount Kailash in Eastern Tibet also known as Arunachala and is depicted on our logo with the mystical letter Om. Kailash is traditionally regarded as the birth place of Lord Shiva. To us, sacred mountain kirtan means aspiring to new heights in our spiritual selves through the practice of kirtan which is a major component of Bhakti Yoga.
