Going up the steep hill to get to the coop. 6 big buckets of sand for our 10x10 coop.

Why sand?

It keeps the coop dryer, and it’s easy to scoop p**p out of it.

Between lifting these giant buckets and kayaking, I’m going to have some super buff mom arms!

Sweet Turkey laid her first egg today. She’s a Favacauna - a mix between a Salmon Favorelle (pink eggs) and Ameracauna (blue eggs).

It was a process. 🥵🥵🥵

🐓 Felix went into the coop and was purring at her and showing her how to scratch the sand to make a nest. 🪹

In the end, she chose to do the laying on her own in another corner. 🪺

She is my first Pullet I raised from a hatchling to lay. It’s a proud day!

Splurge on a brooder plate. Seriously.

1. Your chicks will acclimate faster when they transition to the outdoor coop.

2. They can self-regulate. When they get too hot, they come out from underneath. If they get too cool, they go underneath.

3. Because they aren’t be cooked by a heat lamp, they will be less likely to have pasty butt.

4. Better behaviour from chicks. The brooder plate is a safe space for them to go. And bonus: They wont be aggressive with each other due to a light on 24/7.

5. The cost of operate is less with a brooder plate. Over 3x less!

6. Heat lamps pose a serious fire and burn risk, especially when your chicks are testing their flying skills. A knock to the lamp could have it tumbling down into the brooder or singeing your chick as it flies at it.
