Tried all artificial this year in my front winter planter. Used accent pieces I already had and added few new greenery pieces I was gifted. Love how it turned out & my frugal side is very happy! ππ₯°
I had fun earlier this week getting the front planters at Picks Lakeshore Resort ready for the festive holiday season. πβ€οΈ
Great tips on wintering over some of your favorite Summer container plants. ππ» Tropical plants I've had success bringing indoors are hibiscus, jasmine, mezoo, and dipladenia.
The air is getting cooler outside, so it is time to decide which plants you want to winter over indoors. In this article, we have ranked plants by the ease of wintering over, and there is an outline of all the steps involved until that plant can return to the great outdoors. Lots of great info right here-->> pwwin.rs/CanIKeepIt
It's been a gorgeous month at the lake and all the flowers are still looking so good. ππ»π
π I love the classic look of marigolds. They transition so well into Fall. Every year I grow them from seed. In August I decided to redo the look of my front urns. Last photo is the 4th of July look. After another month some of the plants were getting too crowded and I missed my pop of yellow. I'm so happy how the makeover turned out. And they are loving this Summer-like weather!! π₯°ππ»βοΈ

Anyone else relate? π
I have been super impressed this year with Proven Winners Supertunia Vista Jazzberry! π First time trying this amazing variety. Only planted 1 in each of these planters. Check out the growth compared to last photo I took after initial planting end of May! π― Water soluble fertilizer every 2 weeks has helped them really shine. Definitely planting these beauties again next year. π₯°
ππ Purple and yellow were the matriarch of this lakefront resort's favorite colors. One of my favorite Okoboji special places. π Salvia, Wave petunia, and Dusty Miller made the perfect trio in this planter to honor her legacy.
It's been an amazing summer and 80th season at Picks Lakeshore Resort. There is still lots of gorgeous weather left to enjoy our flowers and lakes! ππ» Take time to slow down and reflect on the beauty all around us.
π§ Can you spot my little flying friend? π Definitely planting more red Salvia next year!! I get these sweet visitors multiple times every day. π₯°
π I love when clients share progress photos. These were my first window boxes to design back in mid May. The mezoo trailing red doesn't bloom in the shade but provides nice variegated interest. Proven Winners Silver Falls Dichondra and the Asparagus Fern have filled out beautifully. π₯° The new guinea impatiens didn't handle the heat as well. Always lessons learned in how certain plants will perform.
Marigolds and Allysum are 2 cheerful and easy to grow annuals that I start from seed indoors end of March. They are really shining on my back patio today! π
We are having a heatwave the next few days. π₯΅ Check on your pots more frequently when temps get above 90Β°. Water deeply when top 2" of soil feels dry. Then sit back and admire their beauty. π₯°
Good Day Sunshine! βοΈπ This was a fun one to design. π₯° The Toucan Yellow Canna from Proven Winners is livin its best lake life. βοΈβ΅οΈ
Great tips on how to properly fertilize your hanging baskets ππ»
This year my hanging basket quartet is a mix of allysum, marigolds, and petunias that I grew from seed. Started these girls indoors in March. It's truly amazing how a tiny seed can turn into such beauty in a few months! π₯° They thrive off weekly fertilizing. ππ§‘π€π
ππ» Helpful Tip: Remember to feed your plants on Fridays by calling it "Fertilizer Friday" π§
Mezoo Trailing Red is one of my new favorite container plants. π This easy to grow and super easy to propagate succulent has the cutest dainty flowers. Give it well-draining soil, water only when top inch of soil is dry, and apply fertilizer every 2-3 weeks to keep it happy. It grows best in full to partial sun, although it will also do well in shade. You may not get the little, daisy-like red flowers in the shade. I also winter over a few pots in a sunny window. ππ»
To propagate, take 5-inch cuttings, pull off the leaves on the lower end of the stem and place the cuttings in damp potting soil. I've shared lots of cuttings with my family and customers. It's the gift that keeps on giving! π₯°

πΊπΈβ€οΈ My front urn planters have traveled with me the past 20 Summers to 4 different houses. Most of that time they soaked in a Full Sun exposure in SD. Since moving to Okoboji 4 years ago they only get a few hours of late day sun. I've had fun coming up with new designs. This year is my favorite so far. π₯° Love the mix of texture and foliage. Only blooming plant is an Infinity Red New Guinea Impatien.
ππ€π₯° Excited to see the First Editions Shrubs & Trees Diamond Rouge Hydrangea I planted at Picks Lakeshore Resort last month has her first set of blooms started! π Just in time for the Patriotic Holiday Week ahead. ππ»πΊπΈπ
First time using Supertunia Honey. They are so sweet! A new favorite for sure!! π₯° Pairs great in my red planter with the purple allysum I grew from seed...that smells like honey. π
Info from Proven Winners site: Supertunia Honey features an incredible ever-changing array of yellow, orange, salmon, and pink blossoms on mounding, well-branched plants. It will grow and bloom vigorously all season long in containers and landscapes, as it doesnβt mind the heat or cool nights. ππ»
My portulaca (aka moss rose) are loving this heatwave! βοΈβ€οΈ And I love this fun variety, Happy Hour Mix. π₯° Banana, Coconut, Deep Red, Fuchsia, Lemon, Orange, Peppermint, and Rosita blooms. Butterflies and hummingbirds flock to the bright colors. Flowers will close at night and during cloudy days. Great drought tolerant choice. ππ»
These Endless Illumination Browallia from Proven Winners are stunning at this lake home entrance. π When I planted a pair of these beauties in this mixed shade planter 4 weeks ago they weren't blooming yet.
This client took advantage of my Summer Maintenance Service while away from their lake home the past 2 weeks. I was happy to come for a visit and see my girls in bloom. π₯°
This was me before I got my Bug Soother spray yesterday. π¬π So thankful my mom and neighbor recommended this amazing all-natural, non-toxic spray! It really WORKS!! And it's made locally here in Iowa. ππ» Can order on their site, Amazon, or find at local Ace or grocery store. Go get yourself and all your family some! ππ»π

Meet my front rock bed special planter. ππ Golden Butterfly Marguerite Daisy & Mezoo Trailing Red from Proven Winners create a simple and stunning duo.π
π Tried growing a new flower from seed this year. Calendula has a pretty daisy-like bloom, which is mainly why I wanted to grow it. Here is one of my pretty girls.π₯° I later learned it has lots of health benefits. Anyone else grown this or tried making salve or cream? Lots of helpful tips online and videos on YouTube. ππ»
How adorable are these wood window boxes?! π₯° I love the classic look of begonias. Cascading bell-shaped yellow flowers & dainty rose orchid-like flowers are the perfect duo. ππ

Soil Matters! π I used to buy a popular potting soil brand that we've all heard of π... but a few years ago switched to PRO-MIX.π Hands down the BEST!! ππ» Good value at Walmart on this compressed pack. Trust me, your plants will thank you! ππ And growing up in my parent's wholesale greenhouse biz, when the "dirt hopper" machine needed a refill I told the high school boy workers to add more "dirt bags"... not "potting soil". π
I love buried treasure! π Discovered this large rock as I was trying to plant one of the hostas. π I had been dreaming of a sitting rock by Pick's Lakeshore Resort's sign. ππ» Thanks to a landscape company working in the area, and my smart hubby's idea to ask the guy with a little cash tip, π we had help getting it out. The medium sized rock was found in hubby's way while getting the edgers set and he dug it out.π―ππ»
It's a GORGEOUS start to Summer here at Okoboji!! βοΈβοΈπ And a fantastic Memorial weekend to come for a visit and reflect in our peaceful lakes paradise.

π Life is Better at Okoboji π
I've been having so much fun my 2nd season designing and caring for the planters at Picks Lakeshore Resort. These beauties are really starting to fill in and show off after 2 weeks in their lakeside home. π₯° Supertunia Lovie Dovie and Supertunia Vista Jazzberry from Proven Winners give that bright pop of color I love.
Stay tuned for a reveal of a makeover project here that my hubby and I completed today. ππ»π Just in time as they get ready to kick off their 80th season of hosting Okoboji Summer Fun. πβοΈπ π‘π’β΅οΈπ€
βοΈβοΈ Love that view! π₯° I went with classic drought tolerant options in this lake home planter. Can't wait for the center Red Rio Dipladenia to bloom! π
