Cognitive therapy believes that our thoughts dictate the way we perceive ourselves & the world around us... Common mind traps ("thought ruts") like outlined in the graphic above...can hold us mentally captive & spinning in an unnecessary whir of negativity. They are typically rooted in pessimism + sometimes may affect our mental health. These negative perceptions are common issues that can contribute to symptoms of mood + anxiety disorders... What are the effects & how can we breakthrough? ⤵ 1. Emphasizing the negatives + discounting the positives ❎Effects: Critical + Judgemental, Anxiety + depressed moods ✅Solution: Replace "but" with "and" to give equal weight to both. Train the mind to recognize + register the good in people. Practice a gratitude meditation 2. Negative self talk ❎Effects: Shame + insecurity, intense self-criticism leading to fear + procrastination ✅Solution: Learn to treat thoughts like mental events rather than facts. Practice a loving-kind meditation + affirmations 3. "Shoulds" ❎Effects: Guilt + stress when you don't live up to your expectations. Endlessly comparing yourself to others. ✅Solution: Movement from "judgement" to understanding. Practice compassion + forgiveness meditations. 4. Catastrophizing ❎Effects: Automatically imagine the WORST possible outcome, anxiety, fear, panic attacks ✅Solution:Practice clear perception "what is true?" practice mindfulness meditations: seeing things 'as they are' + present moment awareness 5. Mind Reading ❎Effects: Convincing yourself you know what other people are thinking without actual evidence, Can spin into negative self-talk, anxiety + depression ✅Solution: Try a "maybe not, maybe so" practice and 3rd agreement: "not taking things personally" 6. The Eternal Expert ❎Effects: Righteous, rigid, narcissism , perfectionism, pride, defensiveness ✅Solution: Humility, practice seeing things from another person's perception. Practice So Hum Meditation: 'I am that."
