If you are receiving Social Security benefits, do you have an advance designation of representative payee on file with the Social Security Administration?

Since the SSA will not accept a POA, the representative payee is the only good option for someone to conduct business for someone else if that person can no longer handle their own affairs.

In the past, a representative payee could not be appointed until the point of need. But now, you can designate up to three people who could serve as a representative payee if the need ever arises.

You can update or withdraw their advance designation at any time and the SSA will send you a notice each year listing your advance designees for review.

On the mySSA account there is a prominent link on the homepage where this can be set up. (Note: This option will only appear for those who are currently receiving benefits.)
