The Nabongo Cultural Centre and Shrine is a shrine and cultural centre dedicated to the Wanga Kingdom of the Luhya people in Kakamega county, Kenya. The shrine contains the tombs of Wanga kings and also, this is where their founding King Nabongo Mumia was buried. Locally known as Eshiembekho, the shrine is managed by the Luhya Council of Elders.

The centre was officially opened on December 13, 2008 by reigning Nabongo, Peter Sh*tawa Mumia II. The site contains various structures on the 12-acres of land: a royal mausoleum, cultural centre, museum, library, bar and restaurant. DID YOU KNOW?... Vihiga County is majorly inhabited by the Maragolis and Wanyores of the Luhya community. Famously known for tea farming in western Kenya, with a rocky and hilly landscape, the Maragoli hills is one breathe taking view when you visit Vihiga county. Being the second smallest county in the country, its the home to Kenyas most seasoned Luhya politician, Hon Musalia Mudavadi and the county has an area of 563 km², beating only Lamu to the last position. It has a population of 590, 013 according to recently conducted national census. It has four main sub-ethnic groups of Maragoli, Tiriki, Teriks and Banyore who have diverse cultural traditions.

The county has five constituencies namely Vihiga, Hamisi, Sabatia, Luanda and Emuhaya, with 25 wards and its headquarters located at Mbale. Kakamega Forest is a tropical rainforest situated in the Kakamega County. The forest lies on undulating terrain, mostly between 1500 and 1600 meters elevation. It is in the watershed of the Isiukhu and Yala rivers, which flow through the forest before emptying into Lake Victoria. The Kakamega Forest is very wet, with an average of 1200 mm – 1700 mm of rain per year. Rainfall is heaviest in April and May ("long rains"), with a slightly drier June and a second peak roughly in August to September ("short rains"). January and February are the driest months. Temperature is fairly constant throughout the year, ranging between 20c - 30c.
This beautiful forest is home to various mammals including bush pigs, giant forest hedgehogs, colobus monkeys, Debrazzar monkeys and pottos. Some of the birds to be seen here include the Blue Headed Bee Eater, Black Billed Turaco, Turner’s Eremomela and Grey Parrots. The Nabuyole waterfall lies in the outskirts of Webuye town in Bungoma County. The waterfall serves as a tourist attraction site in the county.

The site attracts both local and international tourists who flock the area, especially during the December holidays, to enjoy the breeze and relax their minds after a year long toil. The Crying Stone of Ilesi, Known in the local tongue as Ikhongo Murwi, it is about forty metres tall – a large boulder balanced on a column of rock with water flowing from a groove in the centre.

The crying stone is located deep in western Kenya, three kilometres outside Kakamega town on a ridge that overlooks the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

The strange rock formation resembles a solemn head resting on weary shoulders and, from certain angles, it looks like a person who is crying.
