One of my favorite things to study is Epigenetics. It's incredibly interesting and somewhat terrifying. Recycling 101!

♻️ On Wednesdays, we recycle ♻️

Each year, 32% of plastic packaging ends up in our oceans.

The best way to help? Start at the source! Reduce. Reuse. Refuse. Repair. Repeat.

The second best way? Recycle — properly.

1) Understand the "resin identification codes" found on plastic packaging. These symbols (shown above) help determine which polymer was used in a plastic, how it can be sorted for recycling, and which plastic packaging to choose or avoid.

2) Know which codes are recyclable in your area. Each city has different recycling programs, so be sure to check your recycling bin or your city’s rules to learn more.

3) Clean plastic packaging before recycling.

♳ Polyethylene Terephthalate — usually clear plastic used to bottle soft drinks, salad dressings & cleaning sprays. While one of the easiest to recycle (typically into polyester fibers), only about 25% of PET bottles are recycled in the US.

♴ High-Density Polyethylene — stiff, weather-resistant plastic used for milk jugs, laundry detergent containers, shampoo/conditioner & most cosmetic bottles.

♵ Polyvinyl Chloride — soft, flexible plastic used for food wrap, pipping & toys. Almost all PVC products require virgin material & are made strong & elastic due to softening chemicals — phthalates. PVC is one of the most dangerous & hard to recycle plastics.

♶ Low-Density Polyethylene — flexible plastic used for grocery bags, bin liners, & bread bags. LDPE is harder to recycle, but can be reused & often collected by grocery stores.

♷ Polypropylene — heat & moisture resistant plastic used for bottle tops, cereal box lining & yogurt containers. Less than 3% of PP products are recycled in the US, but are starting to become more accepted by recyclers.

♸ Polystyrene (AKA Styrofoam) — used for clamshell takeout boxes, to-go cups for hot/cold beverages, egg cartons & packaging peanuts. Because it's structurally weak & lightweight, PS breaks up easily & quickly travels to pollute our environment. This is the hardest to recycle & the #1 plastic to avoid.

♹ “Other” includes all other plastics that are not often recycled.
