Most Central Heating Boilers or Heat Pumps are very expensive and are protected by using a Plate Heat Exchanger as a system break, especially in old systems.
The Temperature Boiler systems tend to be very similar for 90% of the time, with the Primary hot water supplied from the boiler at 80 > 85 oC with the secondary radiator heating circuit being raised to get as close as possible to the original Delta t design of the radiators installed.

Plate Heat Exchanger plates are made from a series of plates with a corrugated profile which creates turbulence as the fluid flows through the unit which scrubs and helps to reduce any deposits forming on the surface.

The Primary Hot Water (Red) will pass through every second Plate heating the Secondary Cold Water (Blue) which passes between each of the Hot Primary Plates instantaneously heating the cold water to a pre-determined temperature.

The arrangement of the plates, separated by a gasket, ensures that the primary and secondary fluids do not mix.

Additional plates can be added to increase a plate heat exchanger's performance without having to disconnect the pipework from the unit.

A Plate Heat Exchanger instantaneously heats up fluids and does not have any storage which practically eliminates the possibility of any dangerous bacteria growth such as legionella.

A Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger has a cylindrical shell with a tube bundle in the center. The high thermally efficient tube bundle allows heat to be exchanged between the hot fluids flowing outside the tubes and the cooler fluid ( e.g pool water) flowing through the tubes.

Shell and tube heat exchangers are usually used in applications that require cooling or heating large volume of process fluids with minimal pressure loss even though this can quite often still be achieved with a Plate Heat Exchanger.
