Experience the Serenity: A Reimagined Zen Courtyard Home in Hawthorn
Get inspired by the peaceful design of this courtyard house, a beautiful Zen-inspired home nestled in the leafy streets of Hawthorn. With a brief to transform a modest 3-bedroom house into a stunning and relaxing retreat, this renovation project demonstrates the magic of carving out a large courtyard on the eastern side of the home while maintaining the existing roofline. The exceptional design allows the surrounding rooms to provide a panoramic view of a magnificent Japanese maple tree set in a tranquil dry garden setting.
The landscape was brought to life through a sincere collaboration between the clients, landscape contractors, and architects, who used traditional Japanese expertise that is unique to Australia. The use of operable timber screens and cladding adds texture and depth to the design while also providing relief from the heavy materials of the existing house. The outcome is a sustainable and harmonious fusion of sustainability and serenity, a true embodiment of a Zen-inspired home.

We are really excited to show you one of our latest projects! 🥰 This beautiful home is based in Hawaii and designed for a client who is a musician. As part of his needs, he requested some unique features that we were able to provide including a music shed, a covered deck area, and modern design elements.

The home was designed to be both inspiring and functional. We wanted to create a space with unique energy and an inviting atmosphere. This layout was designed to be two independent blocks, joined together through a covered deck, providing an interesting space between them.
This 2 bedroom home features an open area for the living, dining room, and kitchen. With big glass sliding doors, each space connects to the exterior covered deck. As the deck embraces almost the entire building, there is a connection to it from the master bedroom as well.
We managed to achieve privacy and noise cancellation from the music studio by making it a separate block from the main house. It can function as a music shed or a private loft in the future. Part of the design, was to incorporate the structure, leading to exposed Glulam Beams across the project with a flat slanted metal roof.
The material palette in a project helps create a connection to the outdoors. We combined black metal siding for the exterior walls and wood pine siding for the walls and ceiling inside the covered deck, creating a different environment from the rest of the house but keeping a sense of union and connection with the landscape.

The design of this cozy A.DU., which echoes the aesthetic of its main house counterpart, was recently undertaken by Tres Birds in collaboration with the local firm BERA Studio.
They diligently rebuilt 800-square feet to include a kitchen/dining space and bedroom and bathroom facilities; they also had an open loft area that can serve additional living or office needs - perfect for any modern-day family!
The residents of this home enjoyed the natural light and fresh air from multiple windows. In addition, their standing seam exterior is perfect for shedding snowfall during wintertime.

It was a beautiful day, and the snow was melting away. The foundation had been poured, and they had just received all the walls from Sips. It was fast to put up the panels and assemble the trusses on-site. They had most of the building structure done in just a few short days.
Image 1:
The living room structure is almost done laying out. I can't help but admire all the beautiful woodwork- the way the sunlight shines through the gaps between the trusses, casting a warm glow on everything below. It's going to be so lovely to finally have a finished space to relax in...
Image 2:
The cathedral ceiling is coming to life, one truss at a time. The builder assembles them with precision and care, ensuring each joint is tight and secure.
Image 3:
As the panels arrive on-site, the builders can't help but feel excited. This is going to be a quick and smooth build! The panels are pre-fabricated in the factory, so all the builders need to do is put them together quickly on site.
Double-height rolling shutters have the power to create a sense of enclosure or open up in this farmhouse in Pennsylvania that Cutler Anderson Architects designed for clients.
The compact white building was explicitly made because it echoes other structures around them while also using its most budget-friendly features!
Pennsylvania is a place where you can find some of the most iconic architecture in America, such as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater House and Robert Venturi's stunning home for his mother.

Daily Inspiration 🍀
Built at 3,000 meters above sea level in the Chingaza Moor region is this small-scale lodge designed to be an escape from city life and a place where inhabitants can immerse themselves within its surrounding ecosystem.
The architect, Rubén Gómez Gañán, fostered interactions between nature inside the building and out in its natural environment through the composition of the house. A glass tunnel connects two interior spaces. The glass tunnel is like a window to the outside world. It allows dwellers in, bringing natural beauty and rain or sun without getting wet!
In an attempt to create a reflective and honest space, pinewood slats wrap around the room from the floor-to-ceiling. A large window in each module brings natural light into this cozy interior while also capturing daily sunsets.

The fireplace sets a perfect ambiance for you to relax in front of, while browsing through your favorite book on the coffee table nearby. Your eyes wander up to gaze at the large windows, which allow a glimpse of nature from all angles.
House in Maine, Bar Harbor🏠
Bar Harbor in Maine is a beautiful place to settle down and build a house. It is an enclave in the Acadia National Park and its wild forests. The hills are tall, culminated by tall pine and spruce trees. Jim and Tracy wanted their retirement home to be in this lovely place, somewhere near Acadia National Park's and Sand Beach.
Jim spent time researching what their perfect retirement home would be like for a while. They knew they wanted a three-bedroom design with a detached garage, but they were looking for something more than just the basics.
When Jim saw FRANK's Three Bedroom design, he fell in love and knew this would be their house! Jim worked with the design team to customize the design to his preference, including adding the garage, a walkway to the main house, and a full basement. The house has black wood siding as exterior finishes, contrasting the snow and natural elements.
"We really love the design and appreciate all their hard work and talents. We are getting more with them than our local architect when we built our previous house! FRANK team incorporated a garage and basement to the original large 3 bedroom barn design. Very responsive and communicative throughout the process. I would highly recommend working with Frank."

The slope roof design with a truss extended beyond the building is an innovative architectural technique used in snowy climates. The sloping roof works well in the snow, and the extended top creates shade that helps protect a house from sun damage. It is also a great design choice for hot, arid regions because of its apparent cooling effect on this type of climate.
The modern-day architecture firm LESGOURGUES, has always been interested in the way people interact with architecture. They are curious about creating an environment that feels like home and not just a building where one can work or live for a few years before moving on.

After almost a full year of hard work, we are launching the website of our startup - Design with Frank! It is everyone’s web platform to customize their sustainable and affordable house.
Since graduation, all three of us have been involved in architectural projects at various scales. We noticed that most American families don't have the resources to hire architects when designing their homes, but a good design shouldn't have to be a luxury.
We believe that a good design today should be sustainable and efficient. We aim to introduce the sustainable lifestyle to the average American household, providing an affordable solution to living comfortably with consciousness and grace.
