Classically trained harpist, Stephanie, began exploring the world of chilled neo-soul vibes in 2021.
Hello! I am so happy to share that I have been successful in my application to the Developing Your Creative Practice fund by .
Throughout 2024, I will undertake a period of research, training, and experimentation to develop new skills and creative material for recording and live immersive performance.
The most important part of the fund is being allowed the time to explore and learn new skills, something most self-employed people cannot afford to do. I will be sharing this journey online, more details to come.
Thank you to for their incredible support. Thank you to my friends who have shared their experience and advice during the application process. I feel incredibly privileged and cannot wait to get started.

//TODAY// here’s a link for the audio of my Composer-Curator performance.
It’s a live recorded, through-composed piece that includes sound recordings from Mexico, blended with pre-recorded sounds created on the harp, and beats in Ableton. The sounds are of markets, streets, and the water, which connect to my home, Kingston Upon Hull in East Yorkshire. The recordings form a living soundscape that I manipulated and triggered during a live performance whilst improvising using original compositions.
Thank you to Sound and Music for your belief in me. Thank you to those who encouraged me to apply and supported me along the way. Special thanks to Mark Slater for sharing your knowledge and support!!

I’ve loved going back through some of the images I took in Mexico earlier this year. The performance I did for my Composer-Curator project included recordings from markets, mariachi bands, the ocean and street sound I heard whilst out there. I struggle to switch off and have found that travelling gives me to opportunity to stop and experience what’s around me. I used the recordings because they have links with the performance venues and our proximity to the water. I’ll be putting the live performance audio on Soundcloud on June 16th for anyone to listen to.

I’ve been listening to the recording from my live performance at Trinity Market as part of the Composer-Curator programme. I’m really excited to hear how it turned out, it’s strange using technology during a live improvised performance – some things work, and some don’t! Being able to listen back and analyse the performance is a really reflective experience. I didn’t use technology a year ago, and I couldn’t improvise or compose a few years ago, and now I’m doing both! I’ll be putting the performance recording on Soundcloud really soon for anyone to listen to.

I’ve been quiet recently whilst working on other projects, but things are bubbling away in the background. I recorded one of the live performances from my Composer-Curator project and have been awkwardly watching over Mark’s shoulder (hoping to learn something) as he mixed the recording. It should be ready soon and I’ll be putting it on Soundcloud for anyone to listen to.

Just looking through some pictures by from the end of my Composer-Curator project. I’ve been completing my evaluation from the project and reflecting on what I’ve learned over the course of the programme. Reflection is such an important part of learning and we should definitely do it more!
Last year, I didn’t have Ableton or any equipment for performing live. I now have what I need along with some knowledge of how to use Ableton, and have performed live using it. I also organised two workshops introducing the harp to people and two sets of performances.
I wouldn’t have considered myself a ‘composer’ a year ago, but I guess I do now. From the outside, often it looks like people know what they’re doing, but most of the time they don’t, and that’s ok. Thank you to Sound and Music for your belief in me, Back To Ours and thank you to my friends and family who supported me to apply, and throughout the programme.

I’ll be performing an original work developed through the Sound and Music Composer-Curator programme at the end of the month. It will be at two locations:
- March 30th 1.30pm & 4pm at North Point Shopping centre, Bransholme.
- April 1st 11.30am & 1pm at Trinity Market, Hull.
They’re all free and no booking required, just turn up.
The music will be a through-composed piece that includes sound recordings from a recent trip to Mexico. The sounds are of markets, streets, and the water, which connect with Hull and the performances which will take place in a shopping centre and indoor market. The recordings will be blended with pre-recorded sounds that I have created using the harp, and beats created in Ableton. These will form a living soundscape that I can manipulate and trigger during the performance whilst improvising and playing my own original compositions over the top.

Had a great session with Mark last week working on drum sounds 🥁 Sound and Music
Thank you to for taking some amazing 📷 last week for my Composer-Curator project. One of the reasons I applied for the programme was to expand my connections with other artists in Hull. There’s so much talent in this city and I’m looking forward to getting out there to meet and work with new people in whatever form that may be 🙏

We've got a lovely event coming up. Commissioned by Hull Jazz Festival and presented at Freedom Festival Hull The Awakening.
We're in the beautiful setting of Ferens Art Gallery with our good friends Vicky Foster, Tom Kay, Stephanie Halsey Musician, Gary Hammond Percussionist and Sarah Johns Music Party
Anyone want to do this? Feels like I should since it specifically talks about a classical harpist working with a hip-hop artist. Any hull hoppers out there?
Some more piano and Harp with Mark Slater 🏞️ Sound and Music
Spent some time in Ableton listening to different delay and reverb effects ✨

Had my first session this afternoon working on . I managed to set up the interface, controller and Launchpad with Ableton. I then used an idea shared by to create a soundscape and played with a few different reverbs. It’s all feeling strange but progression comes from exploring the unknown 🌅
Been quiet for a while - after a massively busy summer with Weddings and illness, I’m finally starting to work on my Composer-Curator bid . I’m excited to start working on and explore some of the amazing things it can offer.
Here’s a picture from Resonance, originally part of ’s Composer-Curator project and then later performed as part of . Can’t wait to get out performing more improvised music.
