Gotta love custom shirts made with love just for you!
I never get over these colors!!!
Eggs are back at the stand! With the heat wave the girls were not to keen on laying. And I wasn't eager to test if eggs could be cooked in a cooler.
With a feels like temperature of 92° the last thing planned was a coop remodel. But I had noticed the floor had fallen in one corner and to prevent the entire thing from collapsing I needed to do something. I was going for the quick "dead leg and deal with it later" but I couldn't lift the floor. So I pulled the tray (which is made from wood instead of the cheap metal it comes with) and the entire front opened up. 🤦🏻♀️
It now has two 4x4 legs and an extra cross beam for support.
Someone once told me these prefab coops are made with cardboard and hope. I will add they are maintained with blood, sweat, tears and more curse words then you can imagine.
It's 9 am and 80° in the shade. Please everyone stay hydrated.
A trick I use for the birds is giant ice cubes. Any container where the top is larger than the bottom works. Fill almost all the way and freeze. I then remove the ice cube from the container and drop it in the waterer. It keeps the water cool and melts to refill as they drink. The containers don't leave the house and get refilled to refreeze.
It's alive! (Also tethered)
Umbrella repair was not on the list of skills I thought I would need. But 10 out 10 would recommend this umbrella.
Please note that the umbrella usually used to signal the stand is open went on a little adventure yesterday. The cooler is still out while I try to bring the umbrella back to life.
To the neighbors and any others who may have seen not only a flying umbrella but me struggling to bring it home I hope you had as good a laugh as I did.
I love the birds, don't get me wrong. But this is so accurate.
Farmer Fat Stacks! $1 bill editon (addition)
When "clean the coop" turns into "do that project you've been putting off". 🤦🏻♀️

The girls are currently cooperating. The stand has eggs or send a message.
They remember! And remind me every day too.
The time for freezing weather and frozen waterers is upon Ohio. With multiple coops and too many chickens to count I try to make winter care as easy as possible.

This is by far my favorite way to keep water from freezing. I recently found them for a good price at Family Farm and Home but they are available online.
With only 80 watts of electricity used and thermostatically controlled it only comes on when the water could freeze.

My favorite waterproof gloves for filling waterers.

A fantastic local company. But this product is a must have at my house. I use it in winter as a skin protectant against blistering cold wind. Summer after sun soothing. And year round from scrapes and cuts.
Extreme Care Extreme Care is a lotion I made for a friend that has a very bad case on eczema. It is made with Blue German Chamomile (co2 extracted that's important) Helichrysum gymnocephalum and Helichrysum Italicum. Our customers tell us they use this lotion on burns, sunburns, eczema and psoriasis.
With the heat wave of 57° the job of replacing 1 board was on the agenda. Too bad that then turned into replacing 3 boards. So glad the hardware cloth apron was screwed on. Made the job much quicker than having to dig it up and replace it.
Just another day as a crazy bird lady!
This Double Crested Cormorant was spotted on the ground sleeping. It was acting off the day before as well.
So a trip to Lake Erie Nature and Science Center was in order.
It did not handle the car ride very well. A quick exam on intake showed concern about something in its throat. Hopefully it will decompress from its ordeal and a cause and cure can be found.
Definitely not every day you get to catch one of these guys. A not completely waterproof water bird. They mainly eat fish by diving anywhere from 4' to 24' under water.
Of course I have no idea what hen it is either.
I have to say I have great customers! 10 returned cartons! Thank You!
If I wasn't known as the crazy neighborhood bird lady before I'm pretty sure this will cement my reputation.
I got a text from two doors down that they have a hawk down in their yard. I grabbed towels, gloves and box and headed over. It's young and definitely doesn't feel well. I'm waiting on some calls to get it to rehab. Best guess is West Nile Virus. It can be saved with time and care. For now it's hanging out in my garage.
"Derp Der D Derp!"
Found on the egg stand this morning...
Send mice. Addressssss is left garage door gassssket. Thanksssss
Some all natural mouse control.
What do you do when you lose a bird suddenly? I personally necropsy birds I lose. If I find them unexpectedly or have been trying to treat an illness. I am no expert by any means but there are things I can diagnose upon examination.
I understand this isn't for everyone. It's never a task I enjoy. But having an idea of what happened to my bird gives me closer on their death and could very well help treat other bids who may have the same illness.
Omen here. I wanted to tell you all a story about how embarrassing my Mom is sometimes.
I like to help with the chicken chores. I mostly stand watch and clean p**p out of the yard. Sometimes I test the water to make sure it's fresh, but mostly I clear the paths of any debris Mom might step in.
For the most part I take my job quite seriously. On occasion I stray from my yard to see if there is anything to clean up next door. But when Mom calls I come back right away.
Well today she lost it. I was doing my duty while she made sure the chickens had water and then she closed me in with them. I didn't mind. Lots of fresh cleanup to do, but Mom started yelling my name. I heard her say if I don't come back right now I'm in so much trouble. I was right there still working, but she kept calling me. She went round and round the coops yelling my name. Went into neighbors yards still yelling. Then I heard her get in her car. She went somewhere but came back real quick. Fifteen minutes she called and called my name. I kept working though. The chickens didn't mind.
Finally she came to where I was, still yelling, and saw me standing there like the good girl I am. I don't why she kept calling me. She put me in here to clean up. And I did such a good job. Though I might have been too thorough. Cause now while I lay on the couch Mom said I have nasty farts from all the clean up I did.
That's okay though. I'll be glad to go out and find more work later. I love helping Mom.
