Inside the discussion about psychological well-being, there are two sorts of stigma: social stigma and self stigma. Social stigma is "portrayed by biased perspectives and segregation coordinated towards people with psychological wellness issues." Self stigma happens when an individual knows about generalizations that depict the slandered gathering and concur with them.

Stigma may appear to be a theoretical idea, yet the impacts are genuine and destructive. Social stigma encompassing psychological well-being can prompt people being alienated and called slurs. Self stigma can keep individuals from looking for help for their emotional well-being difficulties and decrease strengthening.

One of the best ways you can fight stigma in your everyday life is to speak up about mental illness. If you experience mental health challenges, and are comfortable doing so, then talk about it. There is a big chance that someone who is also struggling with mental health challenges will hear you and feel a little less alone. Every time you open up about your mental health, you are reaching out to others who may need support. You are normalizing conversations about mental health.

Quarantine has affected everyone in a multitude of ways and has been isolating for many people. Unable to gather in large groups and engage in normal activities, people’s social lives have come to an abrupt halt.

Lack of social interaction can be damaging to one’s mental health — human beings are naturally social and look to their peers and communities for support. Without the same interactions that there were before the pandemic, people’s mental health can decline significantly and quickly.

Loneliness can affect your physical and mental health, so it is important to reach out if you need the support of a friend or loved one. Don’t wait for someone to call you. It’s okay to be proactive and let someone know you are lonely and need to make a connection.

Remember that you are not alone, you are valid and you are important.

Openly discussing mental health in society helps break down stigma surrounding mental illness while also reminds us that help is available and we're not struggling alone. Talking about mental health can encourage those having thoughts of su***de or dealing with severe mental illness to reach out to others for help.

Speaking up also involves paying attention to what we are saying and how we are saying it. You can help reduce stigma by refusing to use stigmatizing language such as “psycho” and “crazy” when referring to someone else. If you feel comfortable, correct others if you see them using this type of language. This may seem like a small change, but every action helps in reducing stigma.
