After a very warm day in Uralla it was lovely to sit amongst the shady trees at Alma Park and enjoy Carols in the Park. Hosted by Marlene Jacobs, who herself is a CWA member, and a four piece band it was a treat to singalong to all the Christmas favourites. Santa arrived with the local fire brigade and the children from both Rocky River and Uralla Schools sang a few carols. Donations were also made to the Food Bank in Uralla. A most pleasant evening.
Wonderful to see Ruth Jackson, a long serving member of the Uralla CWA, with Robert Bell the Mayor of Uralla Shire Council getting amongst the activities at the Fairy Festival in Uralla. Fun times being had 🧚🏻♀️.

Lots of lovely goodies at the CWA street stall this week and our Awareness Week cards with a great recipe for apple slice.
We will have these cards at the street stall next week (11th -16th). There will also be some of the spiced apple slice on sale. It is delicious. There will also be some cards at the library.
CWA branches have been handing out this card in various locations across the state as part of CWA Awareness Week.
Our focus this year is on raising awareness of neurodiverse conditions, especially ADHD.
People with neurodiverse conditions often refer to themselves as neuro-spicy, celebrating the unique and exciting flavour they bring to the communtiy. In honour of our neuro-spicy friends, we've including our Spiced Apple Slice recipe on the card.
**Spiced Apple Slice recipe**
Base
125 g butter, softened
½ cup caster sugar
1 egg
1 ½ cups self-raising flour, sifted
Filling
4 medium apples
2 teaspoons lemon juice
½ cup caster sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Passionfruit icing (optional, see recipe)
To make base, cream butter and sugar, then add egg. Fold in sifted flour. Press half the mixture into a small slice tin. Roll out second half ready to cover the filling.
To make filling, peel and core apples, slice and cook in ½ cup water and lemon juice until tender. Drain and mash roughly, then add sugar, cloves and cinnamon. While mixture is still hot, spoon over base. Cover with the second layer of pastry and bake in a moderate oven (160°C) for 25 minutes or until cooked. When cool, top with passionfruit icing (optional).
One of more of the apples can be replaced with chokos.
Passionfruit icing
1 teaspoon melted butter
1 ½ cup icing sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Pulp of 1 passionfruit
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.
At our recent meeting we had a very informative talk by a local behavioural therapist Jayden. As well as his talk he also answered many questions we had. We all have a much better understanding around ADHD and Autism.

CWA Awareness Week starts on Sunday 3rd September. This year our focus is on neurodiversity, particularly ADHD, and challenges related to diagnosis and treatment in regional areas.
"As a nation we have to get better at helping those with neurodiverse conditions because currently too many people are suffering from extensive delays and exorbitant costs that only increases the strain on their mental and physical health. This is particularly so in rural and regional NSW where health services are already under pressure,” State President, Joy Beames said.
“This Awareness Week we want to highlight these issues and urge governments at all levels to look to new and improved ways of addressing, and supporting those with, neurodiverse conditions," Joy said.

Some great info on cooking.
Amy shares her winning butter cake recipe as well as tips on the perfect butter cake, what she loves about CWA.
What are your tips on making the perfect butter cake?
All ingredients should be at room temperature and making sure you cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. When adding your flour and milk do so alternatively making sure to end with the flour, this should be done slowly and gently to insure a delicate crumb.
What do you love about CWA?
Firstly, I love cookery and The Land Cookery Competition. Seeing others compete and succeed in the competition is something that I’m passionate about. Secondly, I have made some amazing friendships; this was one of the reasons I joined CWA as I had moved from Sydney to the central coast, and I was very homesick and lonely. Thirdly, helping our local community and state when in need.
What would you tell someone who was thinking of joining the CWA?
It’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have no regrets and I believe the CWA brings the best out of us.
