The royal palace of Romania (Castelul Peles) located one hour away from my hometown Brasov. Isn’t the architecture stunning?? My husband absolutely adored this building and we ended up visiting it twice in two years ha! 😎

With the anticipated release of my new single on January 19th, I wanted to share some of the meaning behind the song. 💜🎶 If YOU struggle with questions surrounding God’s work in YOUR life, this text is for you.

Did you know William Cowper (author of God Moves in a Mysterious Way) battled chronic depression his entire life (and that was BEFORE medication became available!)!? He even attempted to unalive himself.

Moreover, his depression was deeply linked to his faith. From hymnary.org: “His depression was deepened by a religious bent, which often stressed the wrath of God, and at times Cowper felt that God had predestined him to damnation.” What a spiritual burden that must have been! And still, with the support of his friends, he managed to live close to the age of 70 (pretty remarkable for that time period!). In the last two decades of his life he co-wrote over sixty hymns with his pastor John Newton.

I hope you all gain encouragement with this new arrangement! The hymn “God Moves in a Mysterious Way” is a combination of assertions about God's goodness, sovereignty and wisdom along with commands to take courage and trust in him.

William Cowper (author of this text) concludes this hymn with a strong reminder: We don’t know the future. We don’t often understand God’s ways. But we can trust Him because He has already revealed His character - a good, loving God, who will redeem us for His glory!

Postcard from my holiday trip to Romania! This is the interior courtyard at Bran Castle (aka Dracula’s Castle) and Castelul Cantacuzino in Romania (aka Nevermore Academy from the Netflix show Wednesday). Both are located just 30 min away from my hometown Brasov in the Transylvanian region of Romania. Doesn’t it look so charming? I used to visit it every year growing up. I feel spoiled – both Dracula’s Castle and Wednesday’s school are within driving distance of home, ha!

In the fifth, the bitter taste of the bud is redeemed by the sweet smell of the flower. The message is clear: those things in life that seem to bring forth our destruction are being used by God to bring us grace and life.

🎶 Did you know many hymns started out just as poems? 🎶
It’s only in the recent decades that we associate a particular text with a particular tune and call it a “song.” But for a large portion of church history that was not the case – texts and melodies were interchangeable, so long as the number of syllables matched.

Take for instance “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” – Charles Wesley wrote the text in the 1700’s and Felix Mendelssohn wrote the music in the 1800’s. Who knows that melody Charles sang to it!

MY POINT IS – I wrote a new melody to an old text! The text is “God Moves In a Mysterious Way” and it was written by William Cowper in 1774. In our hymnals it appears under several tunes, but they’re too happy and none of them rightly reflect the somber tone of the text. I can't wait for you to hear this new setting!

We face moments when it seems that God works against our expectations. Life is bad, sometimes, very bad. We pray for His deliverance and for specific sources of comfort. But we ought not find peace in our ability to interpret events but in the God who is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works. As King Solomon wrote: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

God Moves in Mysterious Ways - Verse #3
Cowper makes three moves in which things are not what they seem and God's grace is found in the face of fear and sorrow. In the third verse, storm clouds are filled not with turmoil, but with mercy, which rains down blessings.

Cowper poetically uses two images of "the deep"--one of the sea, and one of the mine--to create the image of a God who is present in all parts of nature while also maintaining a sense of vastness and expansion.
