Double H Homestead

Double H Homestead

Our farm was established in 1875 and we know nearly 150 years later, that we are truly blessed to call this place our home.

We are currently raising jumbo corturnix quail, New Zealand/Californian meat rabbits, pastured broilers, and laying hens.

We just wanted to take a minute and give a big thanks to all who visited the farm over the last several weeks. It’s been very busy and we have surely been blessed. There have been a lot of projects that have been completed and the “Chicken wagon” has finally been deployed. It’s currently home to 75 (3 week old) Cornish cross broilers and they are doing great. We also managed to repurpose a to***co scaffold wagon to increase our quail operations. It’s housing about 400 birds and is moved across the pasture each day fertilizing the field. We hope to post a video of it soon and are in the market for a few more wagons if you know of any near Cerulean. It’s been extremely hot but the next few days look to be a needed break. We hope you had a great day of worship and the new week gives you an opportunity to be a blessing to someone you meet!

It seems like we skipped Spring and jumped right into summer. It’s been a hot but very productive week on the farm.
We finally got the “Chicken Wagon” finished and hopefully will get it out to pasture this coming week.
The hay was cut, we got some work done in the garden and my nephew got his corn planted.
The quail are still hatching every week and we finally have chicks and some hens available.
The rabbits are not enjoying the heat but our nest boxes are full of babies.
Currently we have a good inventory on cages.
We want to thank everyone who visited the farm the last few weeks. It’s a great time to plan a visit and we’ll see you soon! Here’s a few pics from the last week.

Just a quick update on a new farm project. The Woodmizer sawmill supplied the material for the new wagon frame. This is going to be a mobile chicken house for our laying hens or possibly a grow out pen for quail when needed. It’s 8ft wide x 16ft long and will be similar to our other cattle panel structures. We will post some more pics when it’s completed. We’re praying everyone had a great Easter and warmer days will be here soon! Have a blessed day!

“Tray 200 of Quail eggs”
=24,800 eggs

The feeling of Spring is in the air and we are ready for it! Our incubators have continued to hatch quail chicks all winter and we are nearing 25,000 eggs since we started. That being said we are running about a week behind on orders so send us a message if you want on the list.
Our New Zealand Rabbits have all had litters in the last few months and we currently have some good breeding stock available.
Our cage inventory is running low but usually we can have what you need within 7-10 days.
We are making plans for our pastured broilers and hopefully will be getting our chicks around the first of April.
Our Plymouth White Rocks are doing well and we will be hatching some of those in the near future.
If you have any questions send us a message and hopefully you can plan a visit to the farm this spring.

November is a month that we truly enjoy on the farm. We naturally think of Thanksgiving and all the many things we have to be thankful for. We see God’s creation all around us as the leaves change colors and begin to fall from the trees. We’ve spent the last several months filling our freezers for winter. We’ve processed a lot of chickens, rabbits, and quail. Many of you are like us and November days are spent in a deer stand. Fresh venison makes up a big portion of our ground meat and the tenderloins are priceless. Morgan was blessed to harvest this buck on opening day. He hung in our cooler and aged for five days. We processed him and we’re happy to get him in the freezer. He will provide many meals over the next few months and for that we are grateful. If you’ve had success on your hunts we’d love for you to send us a comment or give us a like. If you have questions about processing or need a hand we’d be glad to help. Also, send us a pic of your favorite deer stand snack. Have a blessed weekend and take time to give God your thanks!

The temperature outside is dropping fast but it’s 99.5 degrees in the incubators. We hatch quail most every Friday and today is no different. There are 248 eggs in this batch and they started hatching about 6 hours ago. A lot of them are already out and looking great. Sorry about the video quality they have it steamed up in there. Most of these guys are spoken for but we can always find extras. Send us a message if you want to reserve a few in the future. Stay warm and have a blessed night.

12/11/2021

We just wanted to share a quick video that will hopefully make you smile! It’s been a rainy day here on the farm but these baby rabbits chose to make the best of it. Today they discovered how to get out of their nest box. They are almost 4 weeks old and for the next few weeks they will try their mother’s patience. There are 10 of these little guys and that’s a lot to manage. Fortunately their mother is a professional and up for the task. If you’re a mom we believe you can relate. If you have 10 brothers and sisters you know what it’s like to fight over food. Either way enjoy the video and give it a like! Have a blessed night and we will do it all again in the morning.

It’s been another beautiful week here on the farm and the fall colors are on full display. We just wanted to thank everyone who visited this week and picked up quail or cages. We’ve got a good supply of cages and birds still available with more hatching soon. We had another litter of rabbits born on Tuesday and they seem to be doing great. These New Zealands are great mothers and are experts at keeping their babies warm. We hope this has been a good week for you and your family. If you’d like to schedule a visit to the farm send us a message. Just wanted to share a quick video of some 3 week old babies staying warm and cozy. If you counted 10 you are correct. Have a great weekend!

It’s been another beautiful week on the farm and we have surely been blessed! A big thanks to those who picked up quail this week. We had nearly 700 birds leave the farm and more are scheduled to leave on Monday. That being said we still have several to choose from and more are due to hatch this coming Friday. We have lots of cages available and are working on a new design for some egg roll outs for the quail. The cows are off to a great start with the calving and there’s even a set of twins running around. Fall is a great time to visit the farm so don’t hesitate to plan a trip. We hope tomorrow is a great day of worship for you and your family. Have a blessed night!

17/10/2021

It’s been another great week on the farm and we are thankful for the rain. We took the opportunity Friday to smoke some BBQ on the grill and i wish you could taste it. Baby calves are running around everywhere and the White Rock pullets are growing fast! The quail in the flight pen are flying well and we took another 275 chicks out of the incubator tonight. We have a good supply of cages and lots of things to put in them. We pray tomorrow is a great Sunday for you and your family. if we can be of any help don’t hesitate to contact us. Have a Blessed night!

“18,600 eggs”
It’s been a beautiful day on the farm and it’s definitely starting to look more like fall. Thanks to those who came out to the farm over the last couple of days. October has been busy month. The quail are laying like crazy and today we put our 150th egg tray in the incubator. Our incubators haven’t been turned off since they started running in July of 2020. Each tray holds 124 quail eggs. 150 x 124 = 18,600 eggs. That’s a lot of eggs and a lot of baby chicks over the last fourteen months. We have several chicks and some great Breeder groups available. If you’ve been thinking about quail we’d love to help you get started. Send us a message and come for a visit. We pray you have a great rest of your week and we hope to see you soon!

October has brought us some wonderful weather and we are grateful for it. Saturday is generally a busy day and today was no exception. We want to thank those who visited the farm and picked up cages and birds. We had some quail leave the flight pen for dog training and next week we will begin processing birds to fill orders. Friday is always hatch day and after thirty-six hours in the hatcher the new chicks are moved to the brooders. This weeks hatch was a little over three hundred. They are split between two brooders. We wanted to give you a quick look at the quail at just a day old. Hard to believe these little guys will be producing eggs in just over 6 weeks. There are 158 in this box give or take a couple. We pray tomorrow is a great day of worship for you and your family!

“ The New Chicken”
Taking orders now

We love raising pastured broilers chickens and our Cornish cross put a lot of meat in the freezer this summer. Our total count for this year was around 140 and many of you took some home. If you missed out on those you’re still in luck. We believe our Jumbo Brown Coturnix quail are the next best thing. We will begin processing these birds in the next few weeks. If you are wanting to place a order please send us a message. They come vacuum sealed in packs of 4, 8, and 12. They are great on the grill or cooked in the oven! Perhaps you have a father or grandfather that loved to bird hunt years ago. These would make a great surprise and a wonderful Sunday meal!
Here’s some pics of the birds in the cooler and then the final product. Give us a like if you wish you had some on your grill!

“One year ago today”
One year ago today we started on a new adventure. Our goal was to become more self sufficient while also providing those around us with quality meat that was locally produced. It has been an amazing year since we started our page and we wanted to say thanks to all of those who have supported us along the way. We never dreamed we’d have two hundred followers and for it to happen on our one year anniversary is even better. We’ve had hundreds of contacts and many visitors to our farm. We just wanted to say thanks and remind you that you’re always welcome here. Here’s the post that got it all started. We pray you had a great Lord’s Day and tonight you are counting your many blessings!

A little information about our farm that sits in Western Kentucky and our goals to provide our family, friends, and community with a superior and healthy product that simply can't be purchased in your local, large scale, commercial markets.
Our family farm was originally purchased around 1875 and we know, nearly 150 years later, we are truly blessed to call this place our home. To my knowledge there have always been beef cattle here. My grandfather milked a small herd of dairy cows for several years.
There's always been crops of some type and he loved to sell his garden produce at the local farmers market. Whether he had a truck full or a handful he would go because I believe he loved interacting with people and he was proud of what his farm had produced.
When my daughter was a few years old and my grandfather passed away, we tried to fill his spot at the market. The response was great and people were very kind to buy our produce. I loved interacting with people, and we were proud of what we had grown. One of the stipulations about that market was you had to grow what you were selling, you had to know your product.
Unfortunately that market played out after years and years of being successful. A new market was created downtown Hopkinsville but you could sell anyone's produce and it could come from anywhere, therefore eliminating the knowledge of how it had been raised and handled.
I believe we live in a day and time where people have truly become disconnected with where our food comes from. People just aren't aware what it takes to raise vegetables or animals and how commercial industries really don't want you to know. Produce is shipped all across this country. Livestock and poultry are often imported and in most cases are raised in huge confinement houses and processed in large processing plants as fast as they can and as cheaply as they can, to fill the shelves at the big super markets.
For animals especially, confinement brings health problems and to combat those problems many antibiotics are needed. I'm not saying all of this to tear down the commercial industry today but we have witnessed very clearly with Covid-19 that it's not good to have the majority of our meat handled by only four major processors.
The food shortage was a real eye opener and it wasn't even a shortage of food, it was an inability to get it processed.
One of the blessing of this virus has been the reality that something has to change. We need to know we can provide for our family at least a portion of the food we consume.
We are currently in the process of making pastured poultry available for purchase on our farm. We are new to this but learning from our mistakes very fast. These birds are moved daily across our pasture and supplemented with antibiotic free feed. They have access to lush grass, legumes, fresh air and sunshine. We also have added Coturnix quail, their meat and eggs are healthy, delicious and have proved to be a valuable addition. We have meat rabbits, laying hens, and my brother, my niece and nephew manage a beef cattle herd.
Our desire as we look ahead, is to be a link to connect people back to the farm. We want people to see and experience how animals are raised in a healthy, stress free environment and take in just a little of the beauty that God has created.
If any of this interests you and you would like to share in this experience, your input would encourage us to grow our operations. Again we currently are on a very small scale but the opportunities are endless if people really want to know where there food comes from.
I thank you for your time and pray sometime soon, God allows us the opportunity to meet you on our farm.

“Walnut Cookies”
It’s hard to believe September is gone but October is officially here. It’s been another great week on the farm and thanks again to all who visited. We had some quail and rabbits leave and only have a couple of cages left.
We started the sawmill for a few minutes this evening for a fun little project. Everyone likes cookies and we like to make them on the Woodmizer. This was a piece of walnut that we sliced into one inch cookies. These are great for table centerpieces and other decorations. We sand them down and will apply several coats of polyurethane. If you’d be interested in one for your kitchen table our 8-10 for a party or event, we can make it happen. Here’s a video of the sawmill and some pics of the fresh cookies. We’ve also got some pics of the farm. Have a great weekend!

This is the kind of weather we'd like to have all year long. It's been some wonderful temperatures and September will soon be in the history books. We've been busy and want to thank all those who visited the farm. We were blessed to have several folks come pickup cages and quail. The flight pen has been cleaned and prepared with fresh bedding. We put 150 birds in Thursday and they seem to love their new home. Most of these birds have been pre sold and will leave towards the middle of October but we will always try to have some available for dog training. We are still hatching around 350 quail chicks every Friday so we will keep new birds going in as the others are moved out. It's a great time to raise a group to fill your freezers and with just eight weeks to mature it doesn't take very long. We also have a good selection of young hens that will be laying by the end of October. If they have additional light these birds will lay all winter. If you have questions or just want to visit the farm sent us a message, we'd love to have you visit. We hope tomorrow is a great day of worship and you take time to count your many blessings. We are living in some difficult times but we're grateful to know the one that holds it all in His hands. Here's a quick video of the flight pen and some pics of the birds!

We just wanted to take a minute and thank everyone who visited the farm in the last couple of weeks. We have been blessed once again with many new friends. We've had a lot of quail chicks leave and also some breeder groups. We are still hatching around 300-350 every Friday and have a few chicks available.
The temperatures have been warm the last few days but cooler days will be here soon. It's a great time to grow out a group of quail for the freezer or start you a set for egg production.
We've also had several people come for cages. We have a pretty good inventory of new cages as well as some really good used ones.
We should have some New Zealand rabbits available in a few weeks. We have a couple of litters that we are currently weaning. We set up a new cage system and are excited to see how it works. The rabbits seem to like it and keeping the cages clean shouldn't be a problem. Here's some pics and a quick video of some of the rabbits. Have a great week and we hope to see you soon!

04/09/2021

The feeling of fall is in the air and we are enjoying these temperatures. We have taken over 650 quail chicks out of the incubators in the last week with more scheduled to hatch soon. Several of these birds are sold but we should have plenty for everyone. Our first hatch of golden comets produced about 75% roosters. We are hoping that's not the case in hatches scheduled for this week. The baby rabbits are growing and we have more cages back in stock. Our prayers are with those who have been dealing with storms and flooding. We truly have so much to be thankful for. We hope tomorrow is a great day of worship for you and your family. Have a blessed weekend!!!

22/08/2021

It's been a busy week on the farm and we wanted to thank those who picked up eggs and chickens. We are happy to have our second batch of broiler chickens processed and safe and secure in the freezer. The jury Is still out on whether we will do another batch in September but it's certainly possible and cooler temperatures make it much easier.
Our Plymouth White Rock chicks went out to pasture and will be our new breeders for the winter. They didn't know what to think about walking in the grass but seem to enjoy the extra room and the sunshine.
We took 190 quail chicks out of the incubator tonight and have around 500 eggs to hatch next week. We are currently sold out of breeding age birds.
The golden comets are also due to hatch and we can't wait to see how it turns out. We have around 200 of those eggs incubating so hopefully it will be good.
Our baby rabbits are venturing out of their nest boxes and all but a few can get back inside. They love milk on demand but mommas not tolerating it well. Her patience seems to be running thin.
We pray that this has been a good week for you and your family. We also pray tomorrow is a day that you give God your praise. In a world that seems to be changing everyday we're thankful for a God who remains the same. He alone is faithful and He loves you more than you could ever imagine!
Here's a quick video about patience and some projects we worked on this week!

16/08/2021

Another week has come to an end and it was a hot one. We just wanted to thank those who visited the farm and picked up chicks or eggs. We've had some great hatches and the quail are laying like crazy.
We've finally got a good stock of quail and rabbit cages available. We are excited about our rabbit cages with the drop down nest boxes. We've sold a few already and have a couple available. These cages work great and will save lots of baby rabbits. If your babies are like ours, they often find themselves out side of their box with no way to get back in. This should solve that problem.
We also have broiler chickens to process this week and there's still time to reserve a few.
We hope you had a great day of worship and we are truly grateful for all our many blessings. Here's some pics and a short video of this weeks quail hatch. If you counted 144 chicks you got it right. Have a blessed week!!!!

10/08/2021

We are grateful for the rain we received and took the opportunity to fire up the pellet grill. We smoked a few Boston butts and some of our pastured broiler chickens this morning. The Boston butts are still cooking but the chickens were delicious. These birds usually range from 4-6 lbs. and we have another group about ready to process. Most of these will go in our freezers for our personal use but we have a few available for purchase. If you are interested in reserving a few message us this week.
We also have several hundred quail chicks hatching over the next few weeks. Many of these will be available and we have everything you need to help you get set up for raising quail.
We pray this week is a good one for you and your family. If we can be of any help or you want to visit the farm just let us know! Here's some pics from today.

Photos from Double H Homestead's post 02/08/2021

August is here and we are thankful for the more pleasant temperatures. They likely won't last long but they are a needed break. It's been extremely busy and once again we've had some great folks visit the farm.
We are about 2 weeks away from processing our next group of broiler chickens. There are about 65 in this group and if you're interested in reserving a few send us a message.
We've starting saving eggs out of the White Rocks hens. The New Hampshire roosters should give us some Golden Comets by the end of the month and we are excited about that.
Quail are still hatching and the flight pen is almost empty. We want to thank all the dog trainers that are using these birds. We have another group ready to go in and plan on having birds available for the rest of the year.
We also added some new animals to the farm. The goats are only 4 months old but should be bred this fall and ready for milking next spring.
Last but not least, we received our NPIP certification and are AI clean on all our poultry.
This will allow us to ship hatching eggs and poultry out of the state. The USDA made this process easy and were great to work with.
We hope that August brings many opportunities for you and your family. Feel free to contact us if we can be of any help. Here's a few pics of the farm. Have a great week!

Photos from Double H Homestead's post 14/07/2021

Half of July is nearly gone and it's been busy. The first batch of Broilers have been processed and put in the freezer. The next batch has taken their place in the pasture and will be ready around the first week of August.
The sawmill ran long enough to do some custom sawing. We made some nice 6x6 posts out of some retired telephone poles. They can be hard to saw but the end result is usually worth the effort. These were 20ft long.
We've sold a lot of quail and processed a few over the last two weeks. That being said we still have a few nice hens available. We also have around 40 left in the flight pen that are ready for dog training.
We have around 125 of our Plymouth White Rock eggs in the incubator. These will be the last of those until winter as we have swapped out our roosters for some New Hampshire's. These guys will hopefully give us some Golden Comet chicks by the middle of August.
We've had a hard time keeping cages in stock but can usually have them within a week if you're in need.
We hope you have a great rest of your week and hope to see you on the farm soon. Here's a few pics and a short video.

25/06/2021

We just wanted to thank the folks that picked up quail over the last few days. We had some birds leave out of the new flight pen and reports are they flew good. We are excited to see and meet other dog trainers and currently have a few orders to fill in a couple of weeks. The Plymouth White Rocks are laying great. We currently don't have any White Rock chicks but if you are interested we can hatch a batch just for you. The Cornish Cross are doing great in the pasture. It's unbelievable how fast these birds grow and the plan is to process them around the second week in July. Here's a quick look at the White Rocks. The Broilers are in the chicken tractor. Everyone is safe and sound behind the Premier One Poultry netting. Have a blessed night!

22/06/2021

The sky today was filled with clouds and rain but it surely ended on a beautiful note. Everyday God wants us to be reminded of his glory and this evening it was on full display! Tonight on the farm we are thankful for these wonderful reminders. Have a great week!!!!

20/06/2021

It's been another great week on the farm and we've been blessed with a lot of new friends. We finally got the first batch of broiler chicks out to the pasture and they are doing great. We held them in the brooders until all the rain had passed and they've had a very successful first week. They will be ready to process around the middle of July and we've already had people reserving a few.
The new flight pen is working as hoped and we are excited about the progress the birds have made in such a short time.
Quail chicks are hatching by the hundreds and we found ourselves running out of room in the brooders. We tried to remedy this problem by building another 15ft brooder and it looks like we are good for now. We've had lots of requests for hatching eggs and are saving this week to fill an order for around 700.
We just wanted to share some pics of the farm and a short video of the new brooder. If you have any question or would like to take and day and come for a visit just send us a message. We pray tomorrow is a great Lord's Day for you and your family. We truly have so much to be thankful for!

"The Flight Pen"

It's been a while since we posted an update on the farm and we wanted to show you our latest project. We get calls often from bird hunters who are in need of quail to train their dogs. We've been wanting to construct a flight pen for a long time and it's finally happened. In just a few hours the sawmill produced the lumber needed for the frame. We were able to purchase some used cattle panels for the hoops and a couple of agricultural tarps provided the covering. It's 10ft wide and 32ft long. The birds seem to enjoy being on the ground and are already practicing their flying skills. We are still hatching quail every three days and have a good supply available. We hope you had a great day of worship yesterday and have opportunities this week to be a blessing to someone! Here's a quick video and a few pics. Give us a like if you think this pen is going to work!

Double H Homestead was in Lexington Ky this week for the FFA State Convention. We are extremely proud of Morgan. She won first place in the state poultry impromptu speaking. We also want to recognize Lucas Gamble and his first place win at state. Congratulations to you both, your hard work paid off!!!!

"12,500 EGGS!"

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who visited and contacted the farm. We've had a lot of quail and White Rock chicks leave but our incubators are staying full. It seems like yesterday we put our 50th tray of quail eggs in the incubator. A few nights ago tray #100 & #101 went into the incubator. That's just over 12,500 eggs since last June. The sawmill has been running and another quail dome is in the works. New brooder boxes will fill this one and hopefully help get things more organized. We still have a few cages available and rabbits or quail to fill them. We hope you have a great rest of your week and have an opportunity to be a blessing to someone around you. Here are some pics and a quick look at the sawmill.
