When I think about the past year of building SoulFood Wellness on IG + the powerful womxn that I've been honored to bring into my world, I am beyond grateful. To inspire this beautiful community of ours has truly been one of my greatest gifts. 🤍

But, what I didn't expect to experience was the amount of pressure I would feel to show up every damnnnn day.

Or, the memories I would miss because I was worried about taking + posting content-worthy photos.

The anxiety + stress of writing the perfect caption or the awkwardness of a fu***ng reel.

Or, the zillion hours that would be spent on ⬆️.

Multiple failed launches.

And, trying to keep up with the damn algorithm.

Social media has quite literally become my job + at the end of the day, I didn't set out to be an influencer. It just doesn't fill my soul with J O Y. I want to be the healthiest, happiest version of myself - the best wife, mama, sister, friend, daughter, coach, + business owner. And, I've learned that I can't be this version of ME when I'm always on friggin' IG.

Sharing some love, tips, + tricks for ⬆️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1. Build in time for your self-care + movement routines. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⏱️ On the days + weeks that feel long + busy, it’s important to be intentional with your time so that you’re setting yourself up for success. I plan my movement + active rest days based on what my work day looks like. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Stay true to yourself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤟🏻 Let’s dig into this one a bit more. What works for YOU? What is important to YOU? If you love waking up early, do it. If you don’t, a self-care routine in the morning doesn’t make sense, gf. Choose a schedule + routine that works for YOU, your lifestyle, + what you value the most. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Give yourself permission to make a change when you need to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙌🏻 Your body always knows what’s best for you. If you’re feeling burnt out + beyond exhausted, this is your body’s way of telling you to slow the f**k down. YOU are in charge of your time + schedule. It’s up to YOU to figure out what’s best for your mental health. If something isn’t working + you need to make a change, step into your personal power + get after it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Our days are FULL of obligations, to-dos, careers, families, anything + everything that is thrown our way.

For the most part, this leads to feelings of frustration, overwhelm, + burnout. And then, we simply don’t have the energy to pour into ourselves because all of our time is spent dedicated to others.

There is no “right time.” There is just time + what you choose to do with it. We all have the same exact 24 hours in a day + we will always always always make the time for the most important priorities in our life. If you want to binge Netflix 📺 for 8 hours, I hear that. If you want to meal prep 🍽️, move your body with joy 💪🏻, + let go of that burn out or overwhelm you’re feeling 😭, I support you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, let me ask you:

Comparison is the thief of joy. Always.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While I was making the cutie reel from yesterday, I caught myself doing a deep dive of all the photos leading up to + following our wedding weekend. And honestly?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was in the best 👏🏻 physical 👏🏻 shape of my life. I looked strong + lean + toned.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Want to know the f**ked up part?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I wasn’t eating nearly enough.
I was obsessing over calories.
I felt like s**t every time I stepped on the scale.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And, I wanted “more.”
I wanted to lose “more.”
I wanted to look “more” perfect.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
😭😭😭
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hindsight is always 20:20, gf. As I look back, I can very CLEARLY see just how unhealthy my habits were. But it’s always hard to do so in the moment when we’re so blinded by diet culture + those unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves to be _____ size or weigh ____ pounds.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥂 Now, I happily weigh more, I move my body with joy instead of as a punishment, I honor my hunger + fullness cues, + I’ve created an abundant lifestyle with sustainable habits.

My mind, body, + soul are aligned af.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Is anyone else in actual shock that we’re already a full month into 2022?! I l o v e the month of February though because our habits + routines feel a bit more settled after the holidays + it’s a beautiful reminder to simply celebrate love.

SELF-love, to be exact 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 because…

The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself. And, it should be built on a foundation full of love, trust, joy, + respect. Have you ever noticed that you give SO much to others + don’t pour into yourself nearly enough?! I’m here to tell you that should NOT be the norm, gf.

These 5 habits become non-negotiables for my clients + will help you choose self-love .

Habit #1:
🤟🏻 Create a list of self-care items you LOVE + then build in time daily for these things. You should treat your self-care like a doctor’s appointment you can’t miss.

Habit #2:
🤟🏻 Take yourself out on a date (or 5). It feels so empowering to plan a lil special date + this can be anything! Wandering around Target, kid or spouse free with a Starbucks, going to see the newest chick flick, or enjoying happy hour.

Habit #3:
🤟🏻 Y’all hear me say this all.the.time. When we connect to positive affirmations, we’re re-writing the stories we tell + believe about ourselves. Periodt.

Habit #4:
🤟🏻 Movement should be a celebration of all that your badass body is capable of. So, choose movement that FEELS joyful + makes you feel as strong as you are.

🤟🏻 Write these down. “I am grateful for _______.” You’ll be surprised at how many things you come up with + how they have the power to completely shift your mindset.

Real talk? I will always choose carbs over our diet culture. Every damn day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How many of you jumped into 2022 with goals that sounded like this?
✔️ I’m going to eat less carbs and/or calories
✔️ I’m going to lose ______ pounds
✔️ I’m going to workout every day
✔️ I’m going to go on a diet (WW, Keto, Paleo, Whole 30, and so on)
✔️ This year is going to be different + I’m finally going to make a change

I get it. I’ve been there. I’ve done alllllllll the things to “be healthy.” BUT I’m also here to tell you that goals like these will.not.serve.you.

Eating 1200 calories a day will.not.serve.you. The calories in your food are FUEL for your body + they give you the ENERGY to live your best damn life. 👊🏻 When you restrict calories, you will be bitchy, hangry, + unable to focus on all of those big, beautiful dreams of yours.

Exercising TOO much or to punish your body will.not.serve.you. I can’t tell you the number of times that I worked out because I ate pizza 🍕 or because I wanted to eat a burger and fries. 🍔 🍟 When we incorporate JOYFUL physical movement into our daily routine, we are able to celebrate our bodies instead.

Avoiding carbs will.not.serve.you. Let’s be real - carbs are friggin’ delicious + comforting. ✌🏻 🍞 BUT they are also IMPORTANT to your nutrition. We NEED them to survive + thrive. Nutrient-dense carbs (quinoa, veggie/lentil/chickpea pasta, brown rice, whole grains) should be a part of your diet every single day. 👏🏻

I can’t tell y’all how DEEPLY I despise diet culture + the unrealistic expectations it’s created for womxn of all ages, all sizes, all ends of the earth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• We feel immense pressure to be a certain size.
• We give all of our power away to the number we see on a scale.
• We don’t trust our body enough to fuel it based on hunger + fullness cues.
• We move our bodies out of punishment or obligation instead of joy.
• We fast before a formal event to fit into “that dress.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The list goes on + on, right?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These habits + thoughts are LEARNED, love. Instead of loving + celebrating ourselves, we have been taught to obsess over food, to create unhealthy + toxic relationships with our bodies, and to avoid the “bad” food groups.

As a coach, I talk to womxn every single day who genuinely BELIEVE that they aren’t good enough or skinny enough or whatever enough. And this mindset is the one thing holding any of us back from living our best damn lives. 🤍

So, f**k you 🖕🏻, diet culture. You’re no longer welcome in my world.

“I’ve lost 5 pounds!” 🤍

This is a message that a sweet friend-turned-wellness coaching client texted me last week.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My initial response? - That’s a HUGE victory! (I’ll always cheer you on, gf).
My coach response? - “Do you mind me asking what you’re doing to lose weight? I’ll be able to help see if it’s sustainable or not!” (some tough love followed).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She’s tracking macros + weighing her food.
🌟 Don’t get me wrong, tracking + weighing can help with accountability. BUT it also teaches us to NOT trust our bodies by telling us when to stop eating (at a certain amount) whether we’re still hungry or not.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She’s eating 1100-1200 calories a day.
🌟 This is enough food for a TODDLER, babe. Like, I’m actually not kidding.
🌟 You are a grown, badass, strong woman - Nourish your body like one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She often skips meals, but will eat one large meal when she remembers or feels hungry.
🌟 Eating meals throughout the day will help your body to metabolize food + keep your blood sugar well balanced.
🌟 Knowing WHEN to eat goes back to learning how to trust + honor those hunger and fullness cues.

She’s trying to create a calorie deficit by walking + moving around as much as possible.
🌟 This is not joyful movement. Periodt.
🌟 When we move our bodies out of obligation or punishment, we’ll always feel like s**t.
