Happy Thanksgiving. Im so grateful you are here and that I know you:)
This is a fundamental truth for numerous activities such as running, swimming, hiking, road cycling and so many more. I purposely referred to them as activities and not sports. Yes, they are sports and can have the most fierce competition and charismatic competitors. Yet, i am increasingly viewing these lifestyle activities as the core component to our individual and national mental, emotional and physical health care crisis. It's beyond the petty ego of who won the trophy or set the record. It is of the highest of all activities...self-care through self-discipline fueled by self-competition and reaps a dynamic lifestyle that will sustain you when this world casts its dark shadows on you. Get on your bike and go for a ride. Lace up you boots and go for a hike. Put on you tennis shoes and stride through a local park. Turn off the screen and get that forward momentum rolling towards the best version of yourself! The world needs you to be here and to be solidly in your best health, mental, emotional and physical.
I was watching a podcast with a well known ex-Navy Seal (Jocko Willinck). He regularly recommends Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for people who want to improve their self confidence. Now I’m not a fighter and can never see myself taking that up. But what it did make me think about is just how much mountain biking has an effect on our confidence off the bike and in our day-day lives.
When you conquer that drop that scares you...you feel much more confident in day to day life. You believe in yourself more. If you can conquer something on the bike that was difficult, why not off the bike?
I think mountain biking is one of the best things you can do to improve your confidence and self belief!
Would you agree?

The joy of overcoming set backs is real and the bike is the perfect tool for that journey. When is the last time you got on your bike?
I Outride a spinal cord injury.
I will never forget my first time back on a bike after my accident - I felt free, proud, exhilarated, and overjoyed all at once. Looking down and seeing two rolling wheels underneath me, knowing I was able to propel myself more efficiently and further than my own feet could take me, was an indescribably liberating feeling. Rediscovering the bike post SCI has forever changed the way I see myself and my disability, and I hope to encourage others who are also afflicted with any physical or mental impairments to seek out the power of two (or three, or four) wheels.

The Summer Snowday was fun and spirit lifting but staying in a joyful comfort zone erodes the purpose of life and denies the next new blush of joy on the higher plateau. Hike with me to the Pass and see what is beyond.
In the midst of last episodes storm of emotions. I leaned on my physical habit of literally putting one foot in front of the other and prayed aloud for relief. Ask and Ye shall recieve! Around the corner comes the sweet cool comfort of snow on a summer day. YES Virginia there is a Santa Claus and you can have a SUMMER SNOW DAY!!! A playful payback to my older cousin Jeff who tormented me as a little kid. HAHA!! In this time of emotional storms and breaking hearts...HAVE FAITH. SWEETNESS MAY BE JUST AROUND THE CORNER!!! Daily habits keep you strong so you can help others. Be Well by Living Well my friends.
I kick on the camera to verbally vent while continuing to hike more altitude. I realize later that shortly after seeing the first lake, I began having, what I refer to as, a Ghost trigger. In my experience, I have been triggered in two basic ways. First the unexpected. A sudden image, smell, sound, or comment that quickly and glaringly sends me into trauma. The second type of trigger is what I refer to as a Ghost trigger. It is slow and isn't a shocking moment that pushes you into the pit. It's a slow evolving reminder that erodes the emotional ground under you until you find yourself sprialing into the hole of self-blame.
The immediate joy of seeing the first lake was real but the ghost of memories from a previous special trip with Mitch started that erosion. You see it in the previous episode where I get intense about the attacks and insults that were hurled our way after Mitchells death. Now days later and after several sleepless nights the grief turns inward. How do you handle inward blame and spiral? How do you handle things when one of the cornerstones of your foundation 4 (SLEEP) has broken down? Stick with this episode and see how shortly after an outward petitioning prayer for relief. Relief is what is given to me by the Grace of God's quiet whisper and impeccable timing.
WARNING THOSE SENSITIVE TO OUTDOOR FISHING AND HUNTING SHOULD NOT WATCH THIS. This video is focused on backpack fishing for trout. Discussion of lures, bait, bobbers, line weight and feeding patterns of trout are discussed and demonstrated. Many people find that fishing is there place for mindfulness and that they can decompress and reset their neurological systems to a calmer state while fishing. Mindfulness is not just found or assessible only on a mat in a quiet room. Find what works for you that is healthy long term. Thank You to our New friend Dan who gave a great lesson on the basics of backpack fishing. Right on the spot without rehersal or discussion. Thanks Dan
On this segment the joy of seeing such a beautiful lake triggers my memory of backpacking with Mitch, Jeff and Tyler years before in the Sierra's. It opens a wound surrounding the attacks leveled at Mitch, My Family and those families of other children lost to su***de. I vent to a degree but discuss the importance of viewing the attackers from the correct perspective. How to self care when the crulety of the ignorant and careless pushes you farther into grief and all its trappings. Self Care is not selfish and mindfulness and physical activity are vital for navigating the living hell that is grieving the loss of a child to su***de.
This segment is on day 2 of hiking. We continue to ascend altitude and start to approach tree line. The altitude trees stop growing. Coming across high altitude lakes that are only accessable on foot is one of the most wonderful feelings you can have.
Silence can sometimes be suppression of emotion and a pressure cooker for anxiety growth.
Teaching Isn’t About Managing Behavior It’s about reaching students where they really are.
Day 2 on the trail we demonstrate the safe way to put on a heavy pack and the use of trekking poles for crossing streams. The desert floor behind us, we now begin our walk through the thicket of the forest and undergrowth. A haven for bears.
Another great resource from Mindful Schools. I took the Educator Essentials series of courses and highly recommend them to educators and parents everywhere.
Growth Mindset has been a decade-long staple of SEL and character education. Regular mindfulness training in classrooms supports that set of habits. But some interesting new critiques have got us wanting to refine how we approach our students. Are we perpetuating harmful stereotypes? Are we imparting to our students that they need to be “fixed?” Here’s a powerful blog by a middle-school teacher looking for nuance----concerned about “typically American thinking to assume that students' success and failure is driven solely by individual character and behavior, when actually, so much of any one individual's success or failure is driven by social forces, environment of birth, and systemic biases.” https://bit.ly/2CsYF2c
This video is educational in regard to how I filter water from streams and lakes into fresh clean drinking and cooking water while on the trail. The equipment is old and there are many better ways of purifying water I am sure but this is how I am doing it at the current time. I am searching for a lighter and smaller system for my pack. Stay tuned for future backpack trips to see my coming new system. Hopefully this video peaks the interest of young folks into venturing into the outdoors with their own system of purifying water.
As the Mckenzie brothers would say....Get on your bike eh!!!
