To continue my review of recent sales, this is Green Goblin, which was made in August 2020. Delighted he has found a home but I will miss his soulful eyes!

This is Toby...my work for today 🙂. I think he's done. More pictures in the daylight!

Because my masks come with a mounting pad containing the eyes, they can be worn on the head too!

My range of half masks got a new name….a young customer last weekend referred to these guys as “sniffers” which I think is a great name for them. Have a look at www.valerianfibres.com if you would like to see more information

There goes Sixpence! We had a wonderful time at the winter Droving and delightful to sell masks to people who would be wearing them in the torchlight procession. Just managed to catch a glimpse of Sixpence the Hare going past in the parade. If anyone got any good photos of my masks in action, do please share!

A few of my specially designed badges for the Winter Droving -together with a couple of extras who think they can sneak in too as no-one will recognise them with a mask on!

The Winter Droving badges will be on sale on my stall in Penrith on 26th October or can be bought in advance from my website until tomorrow! https://www.valerianfibres.com/off-the-peg-shop

Although this Apple Jack Green Man mask found his forever home at the Trowbridge Apple Fair, I have ensured he won’t be forgotten! I am very excited to have my first special Valerian Fibres bags printed and ready to go on sale on my stall at the Winter Droving.

“Wolves in sheeps’ clothing”

Crafting these woollen masks takes many hours of work – from the hard physical labour of scouring the raw fleece and carding it ready for use - to the painstaking process of needle-felting the wool – stabbing it repeatedly with a barbed needle to sculpt it into shape.

I think it is this process of transformation that makes this craft so special to me. The beauty and flexibility of wool never ceases to amaze me.

The challenge with animal masks is how to create a realistic animal face which will sit on the proportions of the human one. There are compromises to be made but I always endeavour to create a mask that will be comfortable to wear. The mask design means that although your mouth is concealed, you would be able to talk or sing easily. This makes the masks ideal for any sort of theatre production and my ambition for my business would be to see my masks used in this way – whether it be in an opera or a mummers’ play!

Each mask comes with an adjustable elastic fitting and a mounting pad, which enables the mask to be displayed on the wall, complete with eyes. I always enjoy this final part of the creation process as the creatures seem to take on their unique character, once the eyes are finished!
