Thinking of making a traditional New Years Resolution? STOP!!!!

Do yourself the kindness of a wee lesson in successful change before you go down that path! Researchers have spent entire careers looking at how to help you (yes, YOU) make the change you want to stick. Woo hoo!

First thing is figuring out how ready you are today to make this change successfully.

Spend time making a pros and cons list. Do this for both pros of cons of not making the change. Then for pros and cons of creating this change for yourself.

As you do this, it may help you think about some obstacles and challenges to prepare to overcome.

Set a date to make the change. Any day of the year can be a good day, a New You Day. Your birthday? Your anniversary? The first Friday of the month? Whatever is meaningful and motivating for you is the perfect day.

Do it.

Know that creating new patterns can often include a need to hit the reset button. The important thing is to keep engaged and invested in the process.

Know anyone else working on a change too? Would they be your accountability partner?

Or maybe a coach or counselor to speak to weekly would be more helpful?

Want to know more about the science of change?

US Coronavirus Cases and Deaths 01/11/2020

Feeling the need for a little or big fall getaway, but not sure where to go, how to do it safely, or even where to start?

Here are some ideas starting with the smallest and going bigger.

We all can crave variety and a change of routine from time to time. Staying home is the safest place for most of us, so consider how to treat yourself to a staycation. Get curbside or delivery from a restaurant that you have not tried before. Peruse YouTube for a peaceful meditation. Shop online to find a new cozy mug or sweater to embrace the cooler season. Make or safely buy a fancy dessert. Try a new craft. Enjoy a bubble bath and a fuzzy bathbomb. Have social distance coffee with a friend you have not seen in a while. Visit a farm store celebrating harvest during the week when crowds are less. If open, visit a local fun tourist trap or museum you haven’t been to yet. Or find some online to visit. Collections around the world are open online like never before during the global pandemic. Even aquariums, zoos, gardens are opening online. Rebalance any stuck at home mindset to one of being blessed to be safe at home.

Next safest are probably day road trips. Pack a picnic if you want to cut down on risks. Interesting sights within an hour or two of where you live await you. A visit to a local replica of Stonehenge is on my day trip list!

Leaving home, to make safe decisions start with a check of the virus map of where you are thinking of going. Look at the current case rate per 100k population and testing positivity rate for the county compared to your own county.

Think about ways to cut down on public exposure if you decide to travel. Beyond just packing ppe and hand sanitizer, how can you stay safe? Can you prepare meals at your stay or get curbside or delivery? Use a drop off laundry, wash at the place you are staying, or bring enough clean clothing for an entire stay? What sights and activities are available outdoors and socially distanced? Think about sight seeing or history walks, parks, gardens, river walks, patioed restaurants or breweries or wine tastings, farm shops, sculpture gardens. Many enjoy a good ghost walk in the fall. Do you? Holiday light drive through are right around the corner.

If you are considering air travel, think about which airline is a good fit for your level of risk tolerance as their approaches vary widely. And their policies change frequently too!

Finally, back home, consider if giving yourself a week or two in quarantine may be needed or maybe a virus test, especially if where you visited or places you stopped are having much higher outbreaks.

Consult your physician or local health department if you want a professional opinion on any aspect of your plans. They are here for you!

US Coronavirus Cases and Deaths Follow new cases found each day and the total number of cases and deaths in the US. The county-level tracker makes it easy to follow COVID-19 cases on a granular level, as does the ability to break down infections per 100,000 people.
