There are a many ways and methods in which you can set up a semi automated hydroponic system, such as;

Deep Water culture systems (DWC)
Wick System
Ebb flow
Nutrient Film Technique
Drip system Recirculating & Non-Recirculating
Aeroponic systems...etc

For a begginer I would advise to stick with a simple Drip Irrigation System until such time you have a better understanding on how the plant works
