Some great tips here.

11/07/2023

I went to a workshop with Jo Boaler in 2017 where she said that some people have the same reaction to a math problem that they do when they see a snake!

This is what we are dealing with as math teachers: students who walk into the room and already hate the subject we teach. We need to change the narrative. Remind students that everyone is capable of being successful. Remind students that there is no such thing as a "math person." Remind students that even mathematicians are slow at math.

(Also this always reminds me of the quote from Harry Potter, "Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.")

Do you agree or disagree? Comment below.

Math teachers should not feel the need to work out all of the problems before assigning them to students.

Not only is that not an effective use of time, but it is a great learning experience for students to witness their teacher recover from a mistake. It could also be an opportunity for you to ask your students to show you (and the rest of the class) how they came up with an answer.

Never say, "I was never good at math," especially to children because it gives them permission to use that as an excuse not to try to succeed.

Everyone is capable of learning math. Yes, some understand faster than others - but even the best mathematicians do math slowly.

If you had a bad experience learning math in your youth, change your narrative to, "I could have been successful at math if I had the right support, encouragement, opportunity, and/or desire."

Can We Stop Calling Them Careless Mistakes? There are a variety of sources of student errors in math, and labeling them ‘careless’ might mean missing a chance to help students learn.
