Besides providing our basic need for shelter, our living environment can also encourage interactions among residents, build a sense of belonging, foster vibrant communities, and promote healthy lifestyles.

To meet the growing needs and diverse aspirations of Singaporeans, we need to continuously transform our built environment to accommodate these shifts. For instance, we will pilot assisted living housing options to care for an ageing population.

“No matter where you ride, your bike will pick up dirt and grime. When these gritty substances work their way into the chain, they can act like sandpaper, gradually wearing down your chain and everything it comes in contact with.
Riding with a dirty chain can eventually cause damage to your rear cassette and other parts of your drivetrain. Keeping your chain clean and well lubricated will extend the lifespan of several of your bike's components.
Plus, cleaning and lubricating the chain will make your ride feel smoother, so you can recapture that "new bike" feeling again.” Extracted from ternbicycles website.

So how to clean and l**e? We have compiled the following information from various resources and they are simple to follow and do.

What you need:

👉 Soap / general cleaner: Use diluted dishwashing soap or preformulated bike wash cleaner for frame cleaning.

👉 Degreaser: A bike-specific degreaser (avoid kerosene or turpentine) will clean up gummy parts like your bike chain. Choose a solvent that is easy on the environment (and you).

👉 Chain lubricant/l**e

🚲
Drive-train cleaning:
Apply degreaser to a clean, lint-free rag. Wrap the rag around the lower part of the chain and hold it in place while you rotate the pedals forward using your other hand. Alternately apply light pressure to the sides, top, and bottom of the chain as the chain moves through the rag. Remove and reposition so the rag so that you're always using a clean section of cloth. Repeat until you've removed as much dirt from the chain as you can.
The rag-only method will remove dirt from the outer surfaces of the chain, but can't reach grime stuck inside and in between chain links. To reach those areas, use a soft-bristled brush (such as an old toothbrush) with some degreaser on it to clean the individual chain links. While you're at it, you can use the brush to clean in between the cogs of your rear cassette.

Chain lubrication:
Hold the tip of the chain l**e bottle over the chain near the rear cassette, while using your other hand to rotate the pedals backward. Gently squeeze the l**e bottle to dispense lubricant onto the chain evenly. Keep turning the pedals until you've l**ed the whole length of the chain. Let the lubricant sit for a few minutes as it works its way into the interior parts of the chain. Then, use a clean rag to wipe off any excess lubricant (don't skip this step—excess l**e attracts dirt).

Pre-ride / Post-ride checks

You should perform either a pre-ride check whenever you intend to go for a ride. Alternatively, you can do a post-ride check after your ride, before cleaning your bike. Post-ride check can be useful especially if you cycle regularly and thus by doing so allow you sufficient time to rectify any issues that surfaced during the checks/cleaning, before your next ride.

Handlebar / Stem: Check the stem is not above the minimum insertion mark. Handlebar grips are secure and not rotating.

Headset: With the front brake applied, check for play in the headset bearing by rocking back and forth on the handlebars.

Folding Hinges (Handle bar stem and Frame): Check hinge clamp/lock for any looseness.

Wheels: No play in either front or rear hubs, no broken or loose spokes, Check Quick Release mechanisms are correctly closed and are tight.

Tyres: Check inflated pressure is correct. Check for deep cuts in the tread caused by glass or other debris which could lead to punctures.

Brakes: Rotate wheels freely by lifting the front/rear wheel and check for any rubs against the rim/disc rotor.

Saddle: Check the Saddle height is set to the desired height but not above the minimum insertion mark. Check for looseness in the parts securing the saddle to the seatpost.

Pedals: Check for looseness in the parts securing the pedals to the crank arms. Check for any cracks on the pedal itself.

Gear Shifting and Braking (for pre-ride): Test ride outside your house or nearby area (eg, void deck) before riding further out for the shifting and braking performance and to listen for any unusual sound coming from the bike while riding.

Happy and safe riding!

A simple and useful product (and affordable!) to enhance the visibility of your bike during night riding. Suggest to just install on the front wheel as they can get quite dirty if installed at the rear and thus difficult to clean.

There are other colors but white/grey works the best. Just search for “spoke reflective stick” on any online marketplace.

Looking for a foldie (folding bike)?

20inch 451 or 406? What is that??? 🤔
“7speed should be enough, no need 9 or 10 lah…”

If you are new or still confused, let us try to explain.

👉
Let’s start with 16inch size, which is commonly found in Trifold bikes like Brompton and 3Sixty.

16inch got two rim sizes:
305: 305mm = 12”. Plus thickness of tyre (approx 1.25inch) so total wheel size approx 14.5inch. 305 mainly used for kids bike.

349: 349mm (13.74”). Plus tyre total diameter will be 16.24”.

Trifold bikes uses 349. So if adult buying 16” need to go for 349 else could be too small, but of course is still up to individual preference.

Same for 20inch wheel. Two sizes 406 and 451. 20inch tyre thickness is usually abt 1.1-1.3 inches; So total wheel diameter will be 19” (for 406 wheelset) or 20” (for 451).

Currently in the market, the tyres available for 406 are usually comes in width sizes of 1.5-2” while 451 tyres are slimmer at 1-1.375”.

Slimmer tyres can go faster (like road bike) but at risk of tyre getting trap in those drain cover or any big cracks on the path.

Tyre pressure:
Higher pressure less susceptible to puncture by external forces, but ride will be more bumpy. But of course, do not exceed the max rating on the tyre.
Lower pressure is less bumpy but susceptible to puncture.

Speed/Gear:

Number of speeds doesn’t really relates how fast a bike can go. More speeds actually means you have more sprockets (or cogs) for your rear gears (cassette). A 10 or 11-speed bike will likely to have a larger biggest cog compared to a 7-speed bike, thus better in tackling upslope.

More cogs also make the change of gears less abrupt if using a wider range cassette.

Big size cog (eg 28T) = low gear
Small size cog (eg 15T) = high gear

For eg, for 8-speed bike, it is quite common to see cassette of 11-32T, which can also be found on a 10-speed bike. Thus, theoretically (assuming same bike model and same Chainring used) the 8-speed can achieve the same highest speed as the 10-speed model. However, the 10-speed model will have a smoother gear changes at certain levels since it has two more cogs spread over the same gear range (11T to 32T).

Not so true for a 7 or 6-speed configuration. As the number of gears are lesser, it is impractical to have the same range 11-32T. Thus you will likely to find them using 14-26T instead. This give them lesser capability in tackling upslope (26T vs a 32T) and lesser top speed (14T vs a 11T).

Weight of whole bike:

Foldies can weigh anything from 8kg to 15kg!

16 inch bifold usually weighs 8-11kg, depending on the frame and other parts used.
A standard 16inch trifold with internal gear hub weighs about 13kg; those with external gears can sheds at least a kg off while those with some titanium parts can further reduce the weights.

20 inch foldie (bifold) generally weighs betw 10 and 15kg. A full carbon steel bike will weigh at least 14kg.

Most commonly available models in the market are Aluminium alloy which will make the bike weigh lesser at betw 10-13kg (some manufacturers uses carbon steel fork while rest of the frame aluminium alloy). The other parts such as the seatpost, handlebar, wheelset and crankset can easily make a 1-2kg difference to the overall weight. Disc brake generally also add a 0.5kg as compared to V-brake.

Weight of bike may not be an issue if used mainly just for commuting on flat terrain.

Feel free to share this article if you find it useful.
