💔 Missing my extraordinary mama. Her love and laughter will never fade.

It is with great sadness that I share that my beautiful, loving mother Beverly Valen passed away August 31, 2023.

She was giving, encouraging, vibrant, smart, fashionable & funny.

Beverly was born into a lower middle class family in New York. Antisemitism pushed them to move twice in a year. Her parents’ investment & hard work in the hotel business flourished, allowing them to find safe haven in Brighton Beach and then Manhattan where her parents owned several hotels.

Beverly graduated Lincoln High; earned her Bachelor’s degree in 2 years, and at 21 became an English teacher.

Beverly earned her Master’s Degree in Education from NYU and was well on her way to completing her Doctorate before deciding to prioritize her family.

Beverly married and had 2 children. After divorcing, she raised her family as a single mom, moving to the beaches of S. Florida where found the love of her life. Their shared sense of humor, love of cards, backgammon, and crossword puzzles made them a perfect match.

Beverly later moved to Los Angeles where she was a member of the Motion Picture Mother’s Association; worked in the offices of the community where she loved living; created many close relationships, a rich social life, and cherished her time with her family.

My mother’s strength and tenacity set an example that inspired me throughout my life.

She defied Florida’s teachers dress code that required female teachers to wear dresses as it set a “better example for students”. Beverly wore a dress on day 1, but on day 2 she arrived in a fashionable pants suit (not Carol Brady) and said to her boss: “I’m setting a better example to students” and never wore a dress again.

She fought the School Board and won, allowing me to attend a magnet performing arts H.S.

She was literally a life saver when she went full Shirley MacLaine/Aurora Greenway on my doctors after I had a major surgery years ago.

I can still feel my mother’s hand in mine, hear her unforgettable New York accent, see her laughing, and feel her love.

In the last days of her life, she was in joy, laughing, singing, never missed a day of ice cream and she was still the one with the fastest wit in the room.

I was fortunate enough to to work with Matthew Perry on the first season of Friends. I remember the writers asked him to join them for a rewrite, and from my experience that isn’t a common occurrence for writers and actors. I sat in the audience seats for a few minutes and the writers respect and admiration for him was clear. During that week I enjoyed every moment —just in awe of his comedic ability. Even when he was dating a friend and they met us at party, he kept us laughing endlessly. My husband, tennis coach played a celebrity tennis tournament with him once. Seems he was multitalented as he was an incredible player…a top junior in Canada. My thoughts are with my friends who knew him personally, and for all of us who shared the common experience of watching the show the same time weekly, and for those of you just falling in love with him now. ❤️

I discovered that Mark Paul and I aren’t purple fans, he’s the sweetest guy ever, and we differ on our take of Nurse to Worse. I always saw it as more of a teenage boy fantasy, but he’s correct-that episode would never get made today.

Okay just did the podcast with Mark-Paul Gosselaar. It’s hosted by (writer on the new show) who made the experience an absolute pleasure. If you loved you’ll love the podcast. While I worked with I never had the opportunity to talk with him. So glad I finally did. What an incredibly sweet human. It goes live Wednesday!
