DASH Diet for Menopause - Chapter 5
The DASH diet is designed to help treat and prevent hypertension or high blood pressure and emphasizes eating fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. This diet approach eliminates many foods that are known to increase weight and cause other health issues. While the diet is designed to lower cholesterol levels and improve cardiovascular health, it can help you manage your weight during menopause.
What Is the DASH Diet
The DASH diet is the dietary approach to stop hypertension or high
blood pressure. During menopause, women are at a greater risk for
heart disease. It has been shown that those who ate a diet high in s and fat are more likely to develop hypertension than those who ate a low- sodium and low-fat diet. This is why the DASH diet emphasizes eating nutrient-rich foods while also being mindful to keep sodium levels in check.
Foods you are encouraged to eat on the DASH diet:
β fruits
β vegetables
β whole grains
β low-fat dairy
β nuts and seeds
β legumes
Foods to limit on the DASH diet include:
β fatty meats including red meat and poultry with the skin left on
β full-fat dairy
β coconut oil and other oils that are solid at room temperature
β added sugar
β sugary foods and drinks like candy, soda, and juice
It is also recommended you cut back on sodium intake. When you first start your goal is to limit sodium to just 2,300 milligrams a day, which equals just a teaspoon of salt a day. Once you have mastered this you continue to limit sodium levels until you reach about 1,500 milligrams a day or less than 3β4 a teaspoon.

Utilizing Alternative Practices to
Ease the Journey to Forgiveness
Welcome to the island of Zen. This is where I am going to tell you that it is a requirement to leave your suitcase (lighter load) on the cruise ship. This is not a bullying or strategic tactic to force you to do something that you donβt want to do. We have explored many nooks and crooks on the islands we have visited. You learned how to set boundaries, how to deal with grudges, and how to take care of yourself.
The knowledge you have gained has taken you outside of your comfort zone. Your anxiety levels were fluctuating more than the exchange rates of foreign currencies. I believe that you are ready to piece together everything you have learned to make positive changes in your life.
I would like to remind you that I am not a therapist or a medical
professional. I am not here to give you any medical advice, and
whatever I share is what works for me. If you have any concerns or
queries about your mental health, I strongly suggest that you seek the help of a medical professional. Do not go to the Medical Practice of Google. While many may believe that Dr. Google has all the answers, I can assure you that whatever you are presently researching would have put you in the grave five years ago. Your mental, physical, and emotional health and well-being are important to your family, loved ones, and quite possibly the cashier at the local Target who looks forward to your smile whenever you go to the store.
This chapter is about finding alternative or holistic methodsβwhich
do not include the use of herbs, supplements, or medicationβto help people deal with trauma, stress, or anxiety related to dealing with painful memories. At no point during this chapter will I tell you to go out and face those who hurt you. This chapter will be a βbehind the scenesβ healing practice that will be beneficial to helping you find the peace you need and deserve. I previously mentioned that you cannot expect to be better in the blink of an eye. I donβt believe in quick fixes when it comes to oneβs self-care. This is not a process you can rush. It is true that some people may experience changes quicker than others, but healing from something is not a race. Healing is not a process that can be rushed, and it will take more patience and perseverance than
you ever thought possible to achieve the desired goal at the end of the day.
