Diabetic retinopathy is an eye condition that can cause vision loss and blindness in people who have diabetes.
Early symptoms include floaters, blurriness, dark areas of vision and difficulty perceiving color. Blindness can occur.
Can diabetic retinopathy be treated?
Treatment for diabetic retinopathy depends on the problem and how serious it is. Some of the treatments include: Laser to stop blood vessels from leaking. Cataracts are a leading cause of visual loss in adults 45 years and over.
What is a CATARACT?
It is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye. The lens located behind the iris works just like the lens of a camera. Your vision becomes cloudy and misty because of a cataract on the lens.
Symptoms includes blurred, clouded or dim vision, trouble seeing at night, sensitivity to light.
How do you treat a cataract?
Cataract surgery is the only way to remove cataracts and restore your clear vision. An Ophthalmologist removes your clouded lens and replaces it with an intra ocular lens (IOL)

Greetings to all our patients, friends and families.
After our successful Eye Awareness Campaign month we recognized a few patients that really needed surgery for dense cataracts. These are pictures of some of the patients that had no vision or only light perception. With the help of Advanced De LA Vie Day Hospital, we did operations on these patients. We try to give back to the community once a year.

Successful and Blissful Eyecare Screening Week

Greetings everyone

September 21 to October 18 is Eyecare Awareness Month

This is a WHO Campaign that started in 1999. It is estimated that up to 80% of blindness is preventable and treatable, only when attended to in good time.

As part of the Campaign Drs in SA do various projects to increase awareness about Eyecare in their communities.

These projects range from doing free screening for common blinding diseases (like Cataracts, Diabetic Eye disease, Glaucoma) to doing Marathon Cataract surgeries for free or at a very reduced cost.

In line with spirit of the above principles we undertook a Screening project at our practice @ 202 Centre De LA Vie, Beatty Avenue, next door Life Cosmos Hospital.

The eye screening took place from Monday the 4th to Friday the 8th of October. It was a busy and Eye opening week as most colleagues, staff and members of the community availed themselves to this service.

We examined and tested 93 peoples. We diagnosed common and some uncommon conditions found in the textbooks.

Here is a breakdown of conditions seen:
1. Cataracts = 26
2. Pterygiums = 12
3. Glaucoma = 13
4. Others = 42

It was a busy and fulfilling experience as the community showed their appreciation.
The estimated cost of this service is around R130000.00. This is our small effort of giving back to our community of Mpumalanga.

We would like to thank the staff, sponsors and members of the community for rendering the week a successful campaign.

Well wishes and God bless.
